Sometimes I feel really bad for eating meat again after being a vegetarian for sooo many years, and so I'll stop eating meat for a few days, but then the next thing I know I'll order a salad and forget that it even has chicken in it, and halfway through the meal I'll look down and think "oh, wow... Friday's doesn't serve tofu..." and it won't really bother me. Part of me thinks its the natural order of things, that in life's cycle animals eat other animals, and in our purest most basic form as a being, we are mere animals and are a part of that cycle. But then part of me realizes that sitting our asses in a McDonalds and ordering a quarter pounder just somehow isn't the same as a lion hiding in the grass and pouncing on an antelope. I think the seperation of the entire process of killing the animal to having it there cooked in front of you, or hacked into pieces and wrapped in plastic on a foam board kind of shields people from the fact that they are eating an animal. I mean, when I bite into a piece of steak, I never think "man thats some good cow" I say that its good "steak" or a good "burger" or good "bacon" or "roast" all meat-related names, but none of which really state the name of the animal. Growing up in a country like America where we are so far removed from the actual processing of the animals its easy to forget that it is an actual being dying for our consumption. In other countries people grow up seeing their mothers crack the neck of a chicken, pluck out all its feathers and boil it on a daily basis, its nothing new to them, and so they don't feel much pity for the animal because its just a part of their daily life cycle, and in the grand scheme of things, its just a part of the cycle of nature. We do have more choices now, meat isn't necessary for us to be healthy with all of the new supplements and tofu soylicious products out there, but I don't see the order of things changing anytime soon. So I guess, if this makes any sense whatsoever, I think we have a right, to what we have a right to. That is true in the ruthless world of the animals, and I believe we are part of that order.
