in which i alternately reply to envy and emma for this meme:

1) 2600: the frequency at which old phone systems would give a free telephone call/free long distance.  also the frequency of whistles from cap'n crunch cereal boxes for a while.  this ended up being how the infamous phreaker cap'n crunch got his name, he was the first person to figure out you could use these whistles for phreaking.  anymore it's the name of a group of hackers.  they put out a small magazine of the same name, and there are meetups in most major cities.  seattle's is on the second level of the convention center, last i remember, and on the first friday of every month.  generally a place for people interested in hacking (not cracking, read up before you get all ethical, bitches).  it's fun if you're into that sort of thing, but i'm honestly not that interested in much of what's called hacking these days.  not right now.  it's fun stuff, and really interesting, but i like math and languages and other things more.

1) foo fighters: one of the many bands whose songs i heard on the radio as a kid, when i really had no exposure to music at all, and fell in love with.  not so much out of real appreciation of the songs as much as appreciation for anything that wasn't church music or the lion king sound track.  at any point, i still vaguely like their music.  i don't think i've listened to it on purpose for at least three or four years, however, so take that with a grain of salt.  in any case, there are some of their songs i really like.  that won't ever change, likely.

2) deontology: oh god!  i was once a philosophy geek.  right after i was a pro life conservative christian blindly campaigning for bush.  deontology is an old german philosophy (okay, not as old as epicureanism... =P ), well, okay, one of the most famous deontologists was german, and he was my personal favorite.  kant, that is.  deontology's main tenet is that actions are inherently right or wrong without concern for the result of the actions.  i abandoned this philosophy quite some time ago.  it couldn't really hold up once i was out of the judeo-christian world, and even more so when i became entirely irreligious for a while.  and then buddhism?  bah, no, i'm not a deontoligist anymore.  but deontology still kicks ass.  i totally read multiple of kants works in like eighth grade.  it's hardcore stuff, even if you disagree with it.  and fyi, teleology is the opposing view, that actions are justified by their outcomes.  both philosophies are a bit shortsighted and overly dualistic, but i guess my outlook could be called a bit more teleological anymore.  anyway, next one.

2) freebsd: well, see, emma and envy both chose deontology, and so i let envy rechoose, so that last one was going to be envy's second, but it's really emma's sixth.  so this is envy's real second.  anyway.  freebsd is a direct descendant of the older unices, and i used it for a while after i got over linux.  it was nice and fun.  i don't mess around with these things anymore, but it can be said to bsd's credit that i use osx, which is derived from darwin which is derived from freebsd.  told you it was boring, envy.

2) our lady peace: finally, emma gets her second one!  =P  i LOVED our lady peace from like sixth grade to... late tenth?  i still love our lady peace.  i don't have any of their music.  i don't really listen to rock anymore, but i still absolutely love it.  their song innocent really, really, really matches up with my core philosophy.  i really think we're all innocent.  everyone's doing their best to do what they believe is right, for the most part.  as far as it's worth mentioning, at least.  and it's tragic how we're all so innocent and we're all fucking each other over and being fucked over by each other.  and the song really seems to have a compassionate bent to it, at least i assume that's the way it's meant -- i'm SURE that's how it's meant, and that's really me.  all our suffering is tragic and sad and unnecessary and my response, conscious and instinctive, is compassion.  and that's why i loved the song, and most of their music is vaguely like that, and it's good style, so i like our lady peace.

3) mood disorders: i was once a psychology geek too.  honestly, i've been pretty much an everything geek.  i love learning about everything.  in any case, mood disorders have been a huge part of my life.  many people i know have had them, i was diagnosed with various ones as a child, and it's just really affected me a lot.  i don't care about the modern psychological explanations to it all anymore.  but mood "disorders" themselves, yes, i care about them.  my time in highschool was sad and tragic and melodramatic.  lots of psychological, emotional, and social pain.  i can honestly say more than most knew in highschool, or at the least a very different sort than most knew.  so that's that.  mood disorders.

3) snipping: uhhm.  i don't know what this is.  i've tried for the life of me to figure it out all day.  i looked to see who else has it as an interest, and the only one of any use is my friend brian.  so i'll ask him if he has any idea.  if he doesn't, then, uhh...  i don't know.  i can't tell you since i don't know what it is myself anymore.  did i mention i haven't changed my interests in years?

4) material sciences:  wheee!!  i LOVED material sciences.  it was a two year program at my highschool all about making various projects out of various materials.  there was a section on composites, ceramics, metals and plastics.  there are actually more specific classifications than these, but it was a highschool class.  i don't think i ever made it to second semester, but, well, i never could get into the whole highschool thing.  i scraped by the whole time, ironically.  i love learning, but i didn't have the emotional stability, habits, or willingness to learn in that setting.

4) weegee: easily one of the best early photographers.  i love his style.  so, so, so very new york.  so american.  fit his period flawlessly.  there's not much else i can say, but he's just awesome.  i tried to emulate his style a lot for a while, but i wasn't in the right places at the right times, and i didn't have the experience.  maybe in the future.  prolly not.  =P

5) the pacific ocean: i loves it.  there's not much else to say.  i've always lived in the seattle area, my dad is scandinavian, and i've always felt drawn to and attached to the water, especially the puget sound and the pacific ocean.  that is all.

5) david bowie: i don't know how this got in here.  i think i added it either as a result of being with sarah or because he was in the labyrinth.  i'll go with the second since i like that reason better and it's prolly true.  in any case i don't really have any care for his music, nor do i really know it at all.  sorry.

6) george orwell: i was hugely into his works for a time. still love the style, will always remember, in ascending order of importance to me, keep the aspidistra flying, 1984, and homage to catalonia.  i also really was impressed by george orwell himself, and for a while wanted to do very similar things to what he'd done.  for a long time i wanted to be a war correspondent photographer, or even just go and do that on my own.  i was also an anarchist, and that really made homage to catalonia my deal.  that's that.  ask if you want more details, i'm getting tired of this.  and i need to be in bed soon.  =P

6) already did this one, emma!  =P

7) tropic of cancer: OH MY GOD THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE!  i love miller.  more than is healthy.  his works seem a touch juvenile to me now, but they're still absolutely the best for their sorta niche.  i loves them.  i can't really put into words how it got to me, or rather how all his works got to me, but suffice it to say it helped bring out the passion i already had for life.  helped me believe in the sanctity of passion and sincerity.  that is that.

7) goethe: i liked poetry once upon a time.  i also liked german.  hence goethe.  his poems really are great, and i have a bilingual edition i intend to go thru at some point, but anyway, goethe really isn't that huge a deal for me.  just good german poetry.  of course, on the other hand, i think german poetry is absolutely fucking brilliant.  way better than english.  right up there with french.

that's all miss envy and emma!  hope you had fun.  =P
