Alex had been spending her winter break at home, after the last few weeks at Fandom she was hoping that it would be relatively quiet but it had turned out to be anything but. Sure it had started out okay, her sister Annie was home from college for the break as well and it had been nice to catch up with her. Then her aunt Ashley had paid an unexpected visit and while that had caused a bit of an upset, as there was a sibling rivalry between her mum and her sister, they had resolved their differences and the visit had ended up being pleasant enough.
Then it had quickly gone downhill. Alex and Ray had been hanging out at the park last weekend and they’d been walking along when they’d come across a woman lying unconscious on the ground, Alex had checked her vital signs - suddenly glad for the Health class that she’d taken that semester and had decided that the quickest way to get to the hospital was for her to morph and transport her that way, not thinking of any possible consequences that might come from such an action.
At first no one had said anything, too busy to focus on getting the woman the right treatment to ask Alex how she had managed to get to the hospital. Then the questions had started coming and before she knew it, she was being held at the hospital until her parents could come and get her.
The next few days had been full of constant questioning and still Alex refused to answer questions. Speculation was growing over Paradise Valley and everyone wanted to know how Alex had got the woman to hospital, saving her life in the process. To make matters worse the Plant had started digging around, getting suspicious by the current circumstances and it seemed like they were making the connection that she could be the GC-161 kid.
Finally after much deliberation and consultation with Annie and Ray, Alex had made a decision.
She was going to tell her parents everything. Everything that had happened from that fateful first day of junior high.
Alex was pacing nervously in the living room, Annie and Ray were trying to get her to calm down and tell her that it would be ok but she knew after today that it wouldn’t be. Her parents would know everything and nothing would be the same.
“Ok, I can do this,” she told herself, taking Annie’s hand they walked into the kitchen. Annie was offering moral support and preparing herself for the inevitable questions about why she had kept her sister’s secret hidden from them.
“Mum, dad...” Alex began, faltering slightly, her parents were sitting at the kitchen table and looked up as they entered. “I have something to tell you ...” she took a deep breath, “on my first day of junior high I was walking home from school and ...”
“Hey guys,” Ray burst into the kitchen just then, “you’ve got to see this,” they all went into the living room to find that a news conference was taking place on the tv. It was Dave, who worked as a truck driver for the chemical plant. What he was saying, completely stunned everyone.
“I took Alex and the woman to hospital in my truck... even though it was a Saturday and I wasn’t meant to be driving. I was afraid to lose my job and so I asked her not to tell anyone...” the conference came to a halt as Danielle Atron appeared, playing up for the cameras and making a big show that Dave would have nothing to worry about and that his job was safe.
“Alex is this what happened?” her father looked at her, “is this why you couldn’t tell us?”
Alex made a very big show of nodding to show that was exactly what happened and made a very pointed effort to not look like this was complete news to her.
There was further silence and then her mum asked, “so what were you telling us about your first day of junior high?”
“Oh that, you know it was just a very long boring day ... nothing happened at all,” she said very quickly.
Her parents exchanged glances with each other but seemed satisfied with her response
A few hours later Annie and Alex were in their room, Alex sitting on her bed as she contemplated the day’s events, “why do you think he did it?” she asked quietly.
“Who, Dave?” Annie said, as she sat down on the bed next her. “I don’t know, all I know is that we were very lucky that he did what he did, we might not be so fortunate next time,”
she looked at her, “the sooner you get back to school, the safer you’ll be,”
Alex nodded, “I know,” she said quietly.
