I'M KIND OF SCREAMING

i never ever had the hope that an ice dancing fic would come about in the kpop fandom but oh man you've made my nonexistent dreams come true!

my first thoughts (and I'm not sure if you intended for this to this way and I apologize if it wasn't) upon reading the summary was that this was 1) oh no sports injuries!! and 2) this reminds me of Virtue and Moir pre-2010 olympics with Tessa's compartment syndrome diagnosis and resulting surgery. that was enough for me to go into this waiting to get my heart broken.

soojung and yixing's relationship was so cute. i loved how they were so initially hesitant with each other, as most ice dance couples are--especially since they'd gone through so many different partners--soojung closed off and unwilling to get her hopes up, yixing nervous and just waiting for the ball to drop, for this particular tryout to fail like all the others. but it didn't, and then they were smiling, shy and hopeful, and soojung was dragging yixing out some time later so that he could just stop being a nervous hermit over his english proficiency. i loved the drama-free media reveal of their relationship, how you seemed to showcase that their relationship and partnership was what was important, not what other people made of their dynamics beyond any critique over their on-ice performance. i loved how their relationship just simply slipped into that space between trust and love, between friends and something more, and how cute was it that yixing sang a love confession to soojung?

soojung's fall and resulting recovery was painful to read. that threat of that kind of injury is very real for ice dance and pair couples, the height and the danger. the fear that you're going to drop your partner, the need to truly trust in each other to succeed in these terrifying maneuvers. god, i thought soojung had cracked her head on the ice for a second. but watching soojung struggle with pushing through her symptoms, trying to stubbornly hold onto her spot in the team, /her/ team, wasn't really much better. their fight :(. they were so so close to reaching their goals and it was just out of reach. soojung was stuck between a rock and a hard place, retirement or permanent injury. i was waiting, hopefully, for that miraculous recovery, for something to go right, but not every couple's story can be like Virtue and Moirs, pushing beyond all odds to gain that Olympic gold medal. this was yixing and soojung's story and this was ultimately the end of their partnership. but it wasn't the end of their relationship, nor was it the end of yixing's career because yixing and soojung had a stable enough relationship to love each other beyond these hardships and to support each other in all their endeavors. they were a team; both on and off the ice.

i greatly enjoyed the little bits of ice dance commentary! the mention of the lovely Davis and White and Virtue and Moir pairs. the legendary Torvill and Dean!! Bolero!! how unfairly attractive Alex Shibutani is. how Weaver and Poje were supposed to sweep the competition but hadn't. the little insert about paso dobles haha. THAT DIG AT AGAINST PAPADAKIS/CIZERON 2015!! ngl i internally cackled because what a beautiful pair but what an unexpected rise in rank with a dull program (in my opinion anyways). i loved how you had yixing and soojung doing programs to two warhorses in the beginning of the fic but ended the fic and their last performance with an unknown piece, something for them, one last ice dance that was purely theirs.

anyways, i enjoyed this and i wanted to let you know. thank you for giving me the opportunity to indulge in ice dancing fic! i'll end this comment by linking you to a performance by weaver and poje that i've been rewatching quite often the past few days. i hope you enjoy it even if you have seen it because je suis malade is such a fun, dramatic piece.

/screeches/ Someone who actually likes ice dance!!!

The injury thing was based on Gabriella Papadakis' injury just this year, and I took elements from Tatiana Totmianina's injury back then. (Hoping nothing too serious happens to Papadakis)

Focusing on their relationship beyond the sport was pretty much a cop-out for me, as I'm more familiar with singles skating than either pairs or ice dance /hides/ And besides, the choice of pairing was pretty much self-indulgent, so I figured I might as well go for it. I imagined how pairs and ice dancers would have difficulty interacting and getting along, especially if they weren't related. I confess, I took some elements from some real skaters stories and mixed them in here. Bonus points if you can catch them LOL. ;)

I love, love, love Davis / White, Virtue / Moir, and of course Torvill / Dean (their Bolero is one of the few I actually like). YESSSSS... Why is Alex Shib so unfairly attractive T___T And yeah, I just HAD to make that paso comment. I don't know about you but I was SO DONE with them by the end of the season. :)) I seriously thought Weaver / Poje were going to sweep the season ala Duhamel / Radford did in pairs, but... well, Papadakis / Cizeron happened. (I actually got that "blinded by the pretty" from a friend's commentary videos. You can check out the YouTube account called Patrick Commentates Skating if you want LOL).

OMG. JE SUIS MALAAAAAAADE /cue dramatic singing/

Thank you so much for letting me know what you thought. It's nice to know that a fellow skating fan enjoyed this~ [I bet we'll see more of each other during the skating season... screaming at our faves]

I love ice dancing so much, it's not even funny omg!! But yes, it's totally great to find other fans!

Ahhh, I see! tbh I have been been a little absent in terms of keeping up-to-date with this year's skating news so I think I only peripherally registered Gabriella Papadakis' injury, my knowledge on pair skaters is nearly zero :(. I sincerely hope she gets better though, it is probably an even more frustrating situation for her because they were at the top of their game before the accident.

Quiet frankly, I think focusing on the relationship is common in ice dancing fic (and that's okay!!) as it can be hard to talk about the technical elements a lot without getting too clinical. As a sport, itself, ice dancing's appeal is based on how well the couple can tell the story with their movement and chemistry and artistry; there is a reason fans were so much more taken with Virtue/Moir at first before Davis/White started exuding a more romantic feel. Self-indulgent fic is sometimes the best way to go because why write if you're not going to enjoy yourself to the fullest, right?! OH MAN, I only mostly know the backgrounds of my faves so I will probably suck at this but hmm, is Soojung's skating background based on Meryl's and Yixing's on Scott Moir's? Was the thing about Yixing being unsure about his English something from either Yuzuru Hanyu or Javier Fernández's background (...i'm pretty sure i'm remembering wrong but...).

Same tbh, I love Davis/White and Virtue/Moir if that wasn't obvious already! When will we ever get such an intense ice dancing rivalry again, really? Torvil/Dean's Bolero is so so gorgeous and never ever gets old, even when they do it now it still looks amazing. When I first saw the ShibSibs I was just floored about how attractive they both were *_*. Their Coldplay exhibition piece is one of my favorites. Lol I was just bored at times watching all of those pasos, and as a on-floor dance I'm just not that drawn to the paso doble either tbh. Like I remember watching the 4CC and just thinking Weaver and Poje were so clean and cut and gorgeous, and it seemed that they just had all of their elements together and then well. Chock/Bates though also cleaned up their game really well last season, especially with all of the acrobatic and technical practice pulling through for them. CACKLES OMG, I watch/listen to Patrick Commentates Skating too!!! Hence why I've been a tiny bit obsessed with Je Suis Malade in anticipation of Adelina Sotnikova's version!

Yes, no problem!!! It's always great to talk about skating, and yes once the season hits I will definitely be screaming haha! If you ever want someone else to shout skating feels at, just come at me haha!! :D

LMAO. Yixing was kind of based on Mervin Tran when he was trying out with Narumi Takahashi (mourning for the glory TakaTran could have been). Mervin wasn't too keen on doing pairs, but when someone said he could go shopping in Montreal, he was all "OK that I will do." And yeah, I got the English bit from Yuzuru LMAO.

The Shibs are so attractive and talented. I seriously think they deserve more nice things (aka medals). I wasn't too sold on any of the pasos, but then come 4CC, something just... clicked for Weaver and Poje. While I love Madison Chock, I'm not a fan of Evan.. so... sorry. :)) You watch Patrick's videos? (Yeah, I blame him for the Je Suis Malade obsession)

I'm @jimboppa on Twitter if you want to freak out with my friends and me over there. (Yes, we welcome more people to our prayer circle xD)
