What is architecture?
Towers that touch the sky, pyramids 480 feet high and 750 feet wide, 15000 mile long walls, 4600 feet long suspension bridges, underwater tunnels up to two miles long, 726 feet high dams, canals reaching 1107 miles long, this is architecture to me. When I ride through the streets of downtown Tampa, no longer do I sit in the car staring at the headrest in front of me. Instead, my eyes are focused on all the amazing sights surrounding me and reaching into the clouds. Architecture is a way of life, it is so naive to think they’re just buildings, or bridges, or towers, etc. These structures change and affect life, along with pleasing the eye and arousing the mind. The Brooklyn Bride connected the slums of Brooklyn to Manhattan, changing lives. These buildings aren’t just a roof over our head, but masterpieces in their own way, works of art. Like them or not, you have to respect them and the brilliant minds behind them. I never thought a building or structure could bring out such emotion, or affect the way one views the world. Phillip Johnson proved me wrong with his glass house. The view in the morning, the environment, the atmosphere, it’s like the walls aren’t even existent, and the serenity consumes all. I could smell the trees, feel the sunshine, embrace the peace. That is what architecture is all about.
