Challenge 02: (A Lack of) Color

Coloring, or the lack of it, is essential in every icon. In this challenge, you will make two icons--one colorized and one in black and white. The directions for both parts of the challenge are different, so please read them carefully.

General Rules
1. You must submit two (2) icons.
2. You can only use one screencap per icon, but you may duplicate the image. (Example of "duplication" here. I only used one image in that icon.)
3. You must use the screencaps provided.
4. As always, the icon must be new work and you cannot post it anywhere until challenge results are posted.

Color Icon Rules
For this part of the challenge, you should concentrate on cropping and enhancing the colors already in the icon. Basically, you are making a relatively simple icon where coloring is emphasized.

1. Your icon must be entirely in color. An icon such as this, where part is in black and white, will not be accepted.
2. Do not "replace" the background with other colors. (For example, in this icon, I erased the background and filled it with black. That is NOT acceptable. Icons like this and this are also not allowed.)
3. You may use gradients for coloring only.
4. You cannot use brushes or stock images.
5. You may only use gradients and certain textures to colorize your image. You cannot use them for any other effect. See examples at this link.
5. You cannot use text.
6. Your icon cannot be overwhelmingly one color. Use your judgement on this. Icons such as this or this will not be accepted.

Black and White Icon Rules
Your challenge is to make an icon that is not too contrasted nor too dull. In many cases, you cannot just desaturate the image and mess around with lighting and contrast. Sometimes, you may have to colorize an image before turning it into black and white.

1. Your icon must be entirely in black and white. It cannot be tinted any color. Keep in mind that sometimes using the "desaturate" tool will not completely turn the icon into black and white.
2. You may use textures/brushes/gradients/text/stock images, etc.

---

Many colorized icons depend too much on textures/brushes/text and not the actual colorization of the image itself. I hope this part of the challenge will allow you to experiment with enhancing and/or changing the colors in the original image.

Many black and white icons have some trouble in contrast (or the lack of it) because people tend to just crop, desaturate, and change the lighting. I hope you will utilize all your resources to spice up your b&w icon.
