Duh

You'd think that someone who has moved once across Canada and then again across the Atlantic Ocean in under three years would at least be aware of the self-evident wisdom I'm about to vomit here, but APPARENTLY NO. It took bouncing out of bed this morning and thinking, "Hurray, a new day!" and running through a mental list of all the pleasurable things I have to do today (before I settle in at 7 PM to do hours and hours of dreaded back taxes), before the truth of this platitude came to mind:

'Place' is never enough. The novelty of newness, exoticism, or adventure that comes with moving to a new place wears off unbelievably quickly when you realize that you're experiencing all of these abstract qualities alone - and that, unlike the temporary little orgasms of travel, you're fucking stuck there. There's nothing more lonely or terrifying than moving to a new place, and provided that you can survive those months of abject misery where 'place' is pretty much all you have, and eventually - somehow - make a life for yourself, you then realize that the only thing that makes a place worthwhile is the people who populate your life there. It's funny because it's true!
