He smiles.

Raindrops fall tepid and damp on the driveway outside the garage. I step out of the car into the overcast early evening.

The garage door is partly open and he is working on his car. Competent, confident, and calm, he embodies all I have ever sought and have ever sought to be.

He smiles to see me, cheerful and bright to dispel the evening gloom. I smile back, as I want to and must, and we talk for a lively time. In the end, however, he cannot offer what I seek, nor can I live on smiles, and I continue up the steps to the porch in the overcast early evening.
