http://scottrell001.livejournal.com/40022.html Coming home yesterday, the train pulled into North Sydney station at 5:20pm as normal (except that I actually got out of work 30 minutes earlier than usual), doors opened to allow passengers in & out, and then the doors closed as the train was due to leave.
However the lights on the train kept going on & off, the doors were re-opened, then closed... twice. The air-conditioning conked out a couple of times. Finally after about ten minutes of this there was an announcement that the crew were having difficulty resetting the train's circuit breakers.
Meanwhile unbeknowns to we on board, CTC surrepticiously allowed the train behind us to sneak in on the adjacent platform. This is not normally the way things are done. Only after it had arrived and taken on passengers from the platform did we receive an announcement that our own train was being declared a no-go and the next northbound train would be the one adjacent.
What happened next deserves to be in a cartoon. Our air-conditioned Tangara class train (8 carriages) was vacated with considerable haste and people hurred to the adjacent platform to find one of the old R-class dinosaurs parked there... R-class = no air-conditioning and only 6 cars instead of 8. Nevertheless people sqeezed, edged and forced their way on board even after the "stand-clear" announcement was given. Idiots risking their lives when there would be a better train just behind in the queue that had formed.
I waited 2 minutes and the following train turned out to be an Oscar-class (Outer-suburban cars); one of the newest trains on the Cityrail system with 8 carriages and decent air-conditioning. It was standing room only of course, but no complaints from me. I was just glad to get home.
