[That strange sixth sense people sometimes get tells him that he's being watched. And that other sixth sense that people sometimes get when they're parents tells him that it's his baby girl.
He's no good for her. Somewhere along the way, he had noticed her spirit getting down. When Death the Kid was somehow involved in the conversation, or when he could be glimpsed on the streets or over the network. Why would she have gotten over him? Why did he assume that she had, that everything was said and done and that he didn't have to think about the kid anymore?
But somewhere he was obviously still thinking about it. And when what made him human was taken, and the Darkness stepped in, it surfaced.
He wasn't sure if Kid had died, although he remembered last seeing him alive. But death was cheap here, and either way, he had harmed him. And he would harm her, if she stayed around him long enough. He was almost surprised that it hadn't happened already.
Jackie turns finally to look at her, because she's looking at him, maybe waiting for something. But the sight of her, a little angel, sadness and confusion on her perfect little face....
It was too much.
He couldn't let himself stain her.
The man's face turns downward, into shadow, and he steps backwards into the Darkness and is gone.]
