I was actually never THAT into fairy tales when I was small. I usually just made up my own. My mother always told me fairy tales with the pro/antagonists switched like that. Cinderella ordered her sisters around and when they went to the ball she wrote the story of herself as the victim.
The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold by Francesca Lia Block is my fairy tale bible. Most of her work is modern L.A. fairy tale style and I'm insatiably passionate about her work, haha.
