Diliman natin ang Diliman: State U Darkens Dorms for Earth Hour 2011

Mar 25, 2011 21:26

When much is given, much is expected, goes the old adage. Certainly the same can be said for the environment we live in. We have but one world, this world where we live in, and it’s not as if there is a spare one in storage somewhere.

Our actions have direct repercussions to the environment. One sheet of paper that is folded, one faucet tap that is turned on, one candy wrapper that is disposed-all these can make or break the only world we call home.

Tomorrow, for one hour and beyond, we can all make the conscious effort to conserve our Earth’s natural resources and save the environment. Tomorrow, UP Diliman shall be joining the effort in promoting Earth Hour 2011, which will entail switching off all non-essential lighting for one hour.

The Philippines topped global Earth Hour participation levels for both 2009 and 2010. This year, Interdependent Student-centered Activism (ISA) is proud to be a major partner in this endeavor.

But this is just a means to an end-we can do more than just switch off. “If we want lasting and effective results, then we must inculcate the true spirit of the event into our lives - which is to reduce our consumption of power, water and other critical resources,” said Earth Hour National Director Atty. Gia Ibay.

“We want Filipinos to pledge to a year-long commitment to reduce their energy usage,” she said. And we can do the same, fellow Iskolars ng Bayan.

If you are a dormer, or happen to be on campus, join us and the Office of Student Housing, as the International Center, Kalayaan, Yakal, Ipil, Molave, Sanggumay, Sampaguita, Kamia, Kamagong and Ilang-ilang Residence Halls switch off all non-essential lighting tomorrow from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening.

Earth Hour 2011’s main switch-off event will begin at 6 p.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Globe area. The event also serves as a kick-off for a planned year-long WWF climate change solutions campaign.

Dahil para sa Kalikasan, may ididilim pa ang Diliman.
