"Where friends meet." (Part 1 of 5)

CW 141. We were asked to write vignettes on a place of our choice. I had the gall to choose Drews. For obvious reasons. LOL. So after a month of applied research and interviews (HAHA), I was able to come up with 5 pages of all sorts of things about Drews. I don't know if what I did could pass for written output for CW 141. It looks like one big digression to me.

I broke it up into 5 parts for readability. Here it is. :))

They say in real estate that location is everything. And for Drews Katipunan, this erstwhile popular drinking place this side of C-5, location poses unique possibilities for the drinker who wishes to get buzzed and have an okay time.

For starters, its mere walking distance from Arrneow ensures a steady supply of customers who want to get smashed, including the occasional cool high school student barkada pretending to be legal when half the gang have even yet to get acquainted with shaving cream. And of course, when you have the Blue Eagles, it’s safe to presume the Iskolars ng Bayan such as yours truly are not far behind.

Just a stone throw’s away from Shakey’s and McDonald’s, it is then assured that would-be drinkers would be able to grab some sustenance before/after their binges. While Drews does serve food such as kropek and sisig, nothing beats trans-fat goodness c/o a Double Cheeseburger or the sheer cheapness of a Crispy Chicken Fillet with Rice Meal for only P50.

Drews is located on the 3rd floor of the cathedral-like J & R Concon Building on Rosa Alvero Street. One would have to climb a flight of stairs in order to get to Drews, but ironically it proves to be much easier to ascend rather than descend the said flight of stairs. That is, when you’re smashed at 1 in the morning and having lost full hand-eye motor coordination control shortly before midnight. It’s a sheer miracle no drunk has plummeted from the 3rd floor. Yet.

Which leads to the ground floor, where all Drews sessions end. Drunken people sit at the bottom of the stairs puking in the ground floor courtyard of the building, just a few feet away from Munch and Crunch, a sari-sari store that exists only to sell cigarettes to the few patrons still sober enough to light up a stick.
