Personality/Canon facts:
Taro-kun found a Death Note one day. Not recognising the word 'death', he took it as a normal notebook and used it as a diary. The next day, the bullies he was writing about died. He was then visited by the Shinigami possessing the notebook, Ryuk. After agonising over the bullies' deaths, Ryuk presented him with the Death Eraser to allow him to bring them back to life.
However, Ryuk also conveniently 'dropped' another Death Note, picked up by one of Taro's classmates. Taro-kun convinces his classmate to turn himself in and destroys the second Death Note in front of some police officers, thus 'solving' the case of the bullies' mysterious deaths and ressurections, while allowing himself to continue holding onto a Death Note.
Taro-kun is a fairly street smart boy with very good instincts for self preservation. Academically, he's above average but no genius. He keeps a low profile, and was a target for bullies until the Death Note incident. After the incident, he became more secretive and got better at acting and lying.
He's not sure what to do with the Death Note yet, but he figures it's better to keep it with him than to let someone else get their hands on it.
He has a facination with death, because he already 'died' once. He's also on a sort of quest to find out if Shinigami had ever come down to earth before...

Was it the previous stop or the one before? I should have listened more closely to kaa-san when she was explaining this. I knew it was a bad idea, going for a long trip alone on the subway when it's my first time. Ah..... what am I going to do?

The train is stopping... is that a good thing or a bad thing? Ryuk! Ryuk? I thought he wasn't supposed to leave my side! Where is he? Where am I?
...and is that a parrot manning the info booth?!
