People wanted to mug me today, but it never happened 'cause I didn't feel like getting mugged.

not often do I get a story to tell...need to jump on the opportunity when I do

now, before I begin let me specify that I AM in fact completely fine, so no need to worry and no need to post fearful comments. if I didnt find the whole situation humorous I wouldn't be writing about it

So I get out of work today crazy early, like 3:30 when i usually get out at 4:30 early. I work at 13th and Walnut so I hop onto the el at 13th street station. today as I walked down the stairs to get to the station there were two african-american boys (one on the shorter side, definitely younger, one on the larger side, most likely older than me) walking past the bottom of the steps. Now, I've been confronted in situations like this a few times before over the past few years, and this was by far the most blatently obvious set-up I've walked into yet. as I walked down the steps I saw the two look at me, whisper to one another, and I saw the smaller of the two smile at me as I approached the bottom. I thought to myself, "hmm, looks like i'm probably gonna be mugged," and proceeded past the two, giving the shorter one a nod (I'm not really sure why).

sure enough, the moment I passed by them, the smaller of the two (now behind me to my left) said: "give up your shit, dog." I didn't particularly feel like mugged, so I turned to the kid, laughed to myself a little, said "no", and continued walking.

a moment later, the larger of the two (behind me to my right) spoke up, saying "you say something to my young bull?"

I didn't particularly feel like getting mugged, so I ignored him

the larger persisted "you say something to my young bull?"

I also didn't feel like being annoyed, so I turned and looked at him

"you say something to my young bull?"

I said "yes"

this is when the larger of the two punched me in the face.

I, however, realizing that retaliating would get me several more punches by more than one person, and still not wanting to get mugged, continued walking

it wasn't much of a punch in the first place anyway.

now, apparently muggers aren't used to being ignored by someone after punching that someone in the face, so apparently my apathy towards the whole situation angered them

the larger said "you startin to piss me off, boy"

I, however, didn't feel like getting mugged

so I shrugged, and just kept walking

the smaller finally suggested to the larger that the two should just jump me and end the horseshit, but by this point (with all the walking I've been doing) we had already reached the booths for getting on the el. seeing as the area was filled with several people and a septa cop or two, the muggers couldn't do shit

after I purchased my transfer and crossed over to the other side, leaving the muggers behind, the larger uttered his last statement

"yeah, remember that"

my response

"no problem"

it was so completely surreal

to the point where while sitting on the el I found my surprised that it actually happened, and that it actually occured the way it did

I so aware of it the whole time too, how strange the situation was, and how indifferent I was to the whole thing

I give you my word that all of this is the total truth of the matter.

it was really, really weird

and I still have my ten bucks
