Things that make me go, "Hm... maybe?"

So... I woke up at 2:00 this morning and puttered on the computer when it was clear I wasn't going back to sleep anything like immediately.  At about 3:00 I put the computer back down because I (foolishly) thought I might get a few more hours before my alarm went off.  Not so much with that ( Read more... )

I've been enjoying the tumblr -- I don't think I use it as often as other people do, but it's fun. Some of it's the same crowds, some of the people are different; it's a little bit easier to hook up with new people who share your interests, I think, because you can search for posts that are tagged with whatever you're interested in (say, searching for #sherlock or #watson or whatever), rather than having to dig through a list of journal interests. Nothing's flocked, so I think it can be a little more impersonal, but that's not such a bad thing. Lots of fannish squeeing.

And fannish wanking, of course, but that's par for the course.

It's not necessarily something you go to to sit down and do some heavy reading, unlike LJ or DW. I think if you picked and chose your follow lists carefully, you could have that. But generally, tumblr seems to be more of a fast-paced, very visually-oriented place. You dip your toe in, amuse yourself for a little while, maybe reblog something you like, and then pop out again. I guess it could seem a little shallow, but it's fun. And there's nothing wrong with fun.

(A few words of caution: I don't know what Sherlock fandom is like on tumblr, but Glee fandom on tumblr is basically "All the Spoilers, All the Time." I love me some spoilers, but if that's not your thing, you'll have to watch who you follow. Also, the reblogging feature that's a tumblr staple has a few drawbacks. One: if something that manages to strike a popular chord hits tumblr, you'll probably see it more times than you can stomach in the first half an hour of it being up -- I had that happen with both KONY 2012 and then the KONY 2012 backlash. Two: Oftentimes, people will reblog something not to agree with it, but to disagree with it, so you do have to be aware that what you say might wind up coming back to you with a lot of angry rebuttals. If you're going to put something more personal or political or intimate out there, make sure you've thought it through and toughened yourself up in advance, just in case.)
