School Update!

Feb 27, 2008 13:06

Well, I know I haven't really updated school much since semester started. I just got back my first essay from my English Lit 321 class. I'd written about Sui Sin Far's story "Mrs. Spring Fragrance" and how it shows the interaction of American vs. Chinese cultures. I am happy to say I got a 97%! This is the highest initial grade I have recieved for any class at any time that I can recall...ever. The next highest came one year ago when I recieved a 95% on my essay on William Faulkner's Barn Burning, in which I set out to prove Abner Snopes was a heroic character.

I also just turned in my reader review of Robert Frost. My professor sort of laughed when she realized what I'd handed her: a poem. I wrote it in about 10 minutes this morning. With this in mind, I asked permission to attempt to write my entire second essay in poem. I am going to have to spend a lot of time on it, as it will need to actually be an introspective look at one of the works we have read for class. The reader review was merely a playful attempt to see whether or not it was even possible.

My professor has seen both essays I've mentioned in this post. She said "you've got essays down," when I asked for consideration. The problem that she sees, the one I see as well, is how to write an in depth essay as a poem. This will be tricky, but I really want to stretch my writing muscles on this.

I have to see what I can do.

Remember, this is a very light response. I honestly don't like the rhymes, but I forced some of them intentionally since I mentioned it...

Frosted Flakes

I don’t see what’s so great
about a man who can nursery rhyme.
I read some Frost poems and
I’m reminded of the time
when roses were red,
but perhaps not as … divine!
Many, though,
I love to read,
“The Road Not Taken”
really speaks to me.
The “yellow wood” of Autumn
has always been a time
when we see effects
of choices in our lives.
We leave for school
when summer ends,
we say goodbye
to family and friends.
Still, “Fire and Ice”
and “Nothing Gold can Stay”
remind me too much
of poems from my kinderdays.
