Well, it's my birthday this weekend, time to look back at my life and what makes it worth living. It's been four years since I last
attempted to make a list of my 100 most favorite movies, and I watched a lot more since then and my taste probably changed as well, so I tried to come up with a new, revised list. And this time, I even decided to choose only twenty and rank them!
As you can guess, it toook a few weeks with a lot of rewatching of old favorites which actually helped me learn a lot about story structure and the language of film - and about myself, because apparently there are a handful of common themes that attract me: Low-key slice-of-life movies about growing up (Boyhood, Bambi, Elephant), kids with non-human friends (How To Train Your Dragon, Big Hero 6), communities in fear of change (Hairspray, Matinee, ParaNorman), teenagers living in their own worlds (Clueless, Nowhere, Rebel Without A Cause), and of course huge-ass monsters Pacific Rim, Cloverfield, Attack the Block, the new Godzilla). A lot of my 20 favorite movies fit in one or more of those categories.
Whittling down the list was brutal, especially once I was down to about 35 movies (the last one I cut was Little Shop of Horrors, so now you know my 21st favorite film). The top two took me completely by surprise though, I did not expect them to end up that high, but yes, those are the movies I love the most and I feel good about that result.
Anyway, if for some strange reason you're interested, here's my list.
FAB'S SECRET FAVE
There's no denying it - the following 20 titles are my "deserted island movies", but I would definitely try to smuggle one more film onto that island: The 2013 Disney Channel Original Teen Beach Movie. It makes me happy! It's fun, silly, has fantastic song and dance numbers. It's simply a great time, and I always pop it in whenever I feel down.
But let's just say it is ineligible for the official Top 20 because it is a TV movie and move on to:
FAB'S FUTURE FAVES
A lot of the titles on the list are films I've seen in the past decade which I guess happens whenever someone tries to make such a list. To make this list better, I decided to use the following rule: No movie that I've only seen once in my life, and none from the past six months. So here are the five titles that I watched for the first time this year and are most likely to show up on the next list in 2020:
And now...
