Revisiting 2012, Part 2

Jan 05, 2013 19:12

Favorite non-2012 novel I read this year:

I don't care for zombies. But I really liked this book and it's protagonist simply named R. Can't wait for the movie and either loving it just as much or bitching about everything they changed.

Favorite non-2012 non-fiction book I read this year:

I enjoy reading autobiographical novels written by comedians and this one is definitely the best. It's witty, but also extremely self-deprecating. Craig Ferguson made a lot of mistakes in his life, and he's not afraid to be brutally honest about it.

Favorite 2012 non-fiction book:

The only other memoir that came close was this one. It's funny and poignant and a lot of it resonated with me.

Favorite 2012 novel:

Don't be turned off by the "cancer kids in love"-plot. I was definitely sceptical of it, but in the end I fell in love myself, with this extraordinary book. I laughed, I cried, I will read it again some day.

Favorite non-2012 comic I read this year:

I devoured all available volumes in one weekend. Now I really wish FOX had picked up the TV show.

I call it now: Saga is the next Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones. Mark my words.

THE YEAR IN MUSIC

2012 was a great year for music, or so I've heard. Somehow I wasn't that interested in music this year. A lot of artists I like released new albums - Tom Milsom, Nada Surf, Garbage, Beth Orton, Maccabees, Jens Lekman, Aimee Mann, Smashing Pumpkins, Cat Power, Bloc Party, Regina Spektor, Dandy Warhols - but I only listened to them halfheartedly, if at all. It happens. I try to catch up with music in 2013.

Favorite non-2012 song I discovered this year:

I must have listened to Imperial Teen's "Our Time" a few hundred times. It's short and catchy and I wish I had already known it ten years ago.

Favorite songs:

Yeah, let's face it, I loved Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me maybe" and I'm not ashamed to admit it, it's a fantastic pop song with a killer hook. In non-single news, I also liked Bloc Party's "V.A.L.I.S."

Favorite box set:

Yeah, this was pretty much unbeatable.

Favorite Internet artist:

Pogo must be my favorite musical discovery of the year. See his videos here, listen to and buy his stuff here.

For the second year in a row the winner of the Mercury Prize is also my album #1.
