Susanna runs to the art room. We hear Lisa in the distance.
LISA: “If I spread my fingers out my hand looked more human, so I did that. But it
was tiring holding my fingers apart, so I let them relax and then I turned my
hand over but the back of it wasn’t much better.”
SUSANNA: realizing Lisa’s reading out her diary My, god.
LISA: “My veins bulged….
Susanna runs down the stairs to the tunnels from where the voice is coming. Lisa is still
reading out Susanna’s diary in the distance.
LISA: Shut up I’m reading! Shut up!
SUSANNA: Lisa!
LISA: “I can honestly say that my memory has been transformed…
And by Freud’s definition I have achieved mental health and my discharge
sheet reads ‘recovered’”. Recovered. Lisa laughs. Recovered?
Susanna is at a crossroad between two tunnels. She doesn’t know where the sound comes
from.
SUSANNA: Don’t do that!
LISA: “Whatever, whatever it was…
SUSANNA: Lisa!
She figures out which way to go, she actually sees Lisa down one tunnel, and starts running.
LISA: “Had I stopped arguing with myself?” laughs Recovered.
SUSANNA: Lisa!
LISA: Recovered?
Susanna keeps running down a tunnel and then all at once she stands in front of Polly,
Georgina and Lisa. Polly is holding and petting Ruby. Georgina is sitting on the floor. Lisa is
smoking and reading out of Susanna’s diary.
POLLY: Hey, Susanna.
LISA: We were just reading your book. We figured, since it’s your last night, we’d
have a little salon, a little read-aloud. Celebrate all the wisdom you’re carrying
into the world.
She throws away the rest of her cigarette.
You know, try to learn something, grow as people.
We read how when you was a baby they strapped you to a board and how you
think Georgina doesn’t really want to leave and Polly never will and that I’m
criminally insane.
SUSANNA: What, what are you guys doing here?
LISA: “Lisa’s eyes, once so magnetic now just look empty.”
SUSANNA: Lisa, that is mine. It’s mine.
LISA: “Georgina.”
SUSANNA: Oh, god.
LISA: “Georgina lies only to people who keep her here. Sometimes I think she wants
to live in Oz forever.” How perceptive.
Georgina stands up and walks up to Susanna, who backs away as far as possible.
SUSANNA: No, Georgina, I...
GEORGINA: Yelling at Susanna’s face.
You better erase that thing, you better erase it! Cause my father is the head of
the CIA and he can have you dead in minutes!
LISA: “In this world looks are everything.”
SUSANNA: Oh, god.
LISA: “Sometimes I think Polly’s sweetness and purity aren’t genuine at all, but a
desperate attempt to make it easier for us to look at her.”
So nice of you to pass judgment on us now that you’re cured, hum?
She moves the headlight to shine into Susanna’s face.
SUSANNA: What the fuck are you doing Lisa?
LISA: I’m playing the villain, baby, just like you want. I try to give you everything
you want.
SUSANNA: No you don’t.
Lisa walks up to Susanna.
LISA: You wanted your file, I found you your file. You wanted out, I got you out.
You needed money, I found you some. I’m fucking consistent, I told you the
truth, I didn’t write it down in a fucking book.
She slaps Susanna’s face with her diary.
I told you to your face. And I told Daisy to her face, what everybody knew and
wouldn’t say, and she killed herself. And I played the fucking villain. Just like
you want it.
SUSANNA: Why would I want that?
LISA: Because it makes you the good guy, sweetie. It makes you the good guy and
you come back here, all sweetness and light, sad and contrite and everybody
sits, ringing their hands, congratulating you and all your bravery. And
meanwhile I’m going through guys at the bus station for the money that was in
her fucking robe.
Susanna runs away.
POLLY: Stop it, Lisa. She’s too…
GEORGINA: Shut up, Polly!
Lisa follows Susanna.
LISA: Where’re you going? I’m talking to you, where are you going? Huh?
Susanna finds a light wooden door and opens it. It leads down some stairs into another
tunnel.
LISA: Where’re you going? I’m talking to you!
Lisa now arrives at the stairs and continues following Susanna.
LISA: Susanna. Why, you don’t like me any more?
SUSANNA: No! I don’t!
LISA: ‘Cause you’re free?
GEORGINA: somewhere in the background Shut up!!
LISA: You think you’re free? I’m free! You don’t know what freedom is! I’m free!
Susanna has now arrived in some dark room. It is the very same room the movie starts in.
LISA: I can breathe! And you, you’re going to go choke on your average fucking
mediocre life.
Susanna notices that the room has a heavy wooden sliding door. She tries to close it. She
manages to make the door move but it comes out all at once squeezing her hand against the
wall as it closes. Susanna cries out. The door opens. Lisa is standing in front of her. Susanna
takes a look at her hurt hand.
LISA: You know, there are too many buttons in the world. There’s too many buttons
in the world, just…
SUSANNA: looking at her hand No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
LISA: There’s way too many just begging to be pressed. They’re just begging to be
pressed, you know, they’re just, they’re just begging to be pressed. And it
makes me wonder, you know, it really makes me fucking wonder, why doesn’t
anybody ever press mine? Why am I so neglected? Why doesn’t anybody reach
in and rip out the truth and tell me that I’m a fucking whore? And that my
parents wish I were dead?
SUSANNA: Because you’re dead already Lisa!
Georgina and Polly have reached the scene. Georgina is holding the diary and Polly is
holding Ruby.
SUSANNA: No one cares if you die, Lisa, because you’re dead already. Your heart is cold.
That’s why you keep coming back here. You’re not free, you need this place,
you need it to feel alive. It’s pathetic.
Georgina has a breakdown and starts screaming. She throws her book down on the floor.
Lisa has stopped yelling and begins to cry. This makes Polly freak out and run away.
LISA: God. She kneels on the floor and cries out loud.
Susanna slowly walks down the stairs. Lisa is screaming. Georgina is standing in one corner
of the room, absolutely terrified while Polly stands in the opposite corner still holding Ruby.
SUSANNA: I’ve wasted a year of my life. Maybe everyone out there is a liar. And maybe
the whole world is stupid and ignorant, but I’d rather be in it, but I’d rather be
fucking in it than down here with you.
Lisa is still kneeing on the floor holding her head in her hands. In her left hand she’s got a
syringe. She’s looking at Susanna. She stretches out her right arm and is ready to inject.
GEORGINA: Lisa, don’t.
Lisa lets the syringe drop to the floor and starts crying.
Cut.
i'm either Lisa or Suzanna. I still want Suzanna.
