Tale of the Tape VI: Deeper into the Data Pool.

I finally got my annual Blood tests back. Everything is near perfect. Nothing has change dramatically. I've now got 13 years of personal data to evaluate ( Read more... )

Actually D3 and D2 are completely different forms of the vitamin and the body actually converts them to two kinds of 25OH analogs, 25OH-Cholecalciferol and 25OH-Ergocalciferol,(respectively) both with biological activity.

In Humans D2 appears to be better at bone mineralization in matters of severe deficiency and has a shorter 1/2 life in the body due to a lower binding affinity to the Vit D binding protein. This is part of the reason why single Vit D2 50,000IU injections are prescribed when deficiency is 1st discovered and why D2 was originally used in the 1930s to cure rickets.

D3 appears to better at maintaining 25OH-Vit D levels when levels are normal (again b/c of the longer 1/2 life) but is also more likely to produce hypercalcemia when too much D3 is ingested.

There's some debate as to whether D2 is as efficacious as D3 in raising 25OH-Vit levels. Some researchers show equal efficacy (1:1), while others have D3 being more efficacious by as much as 10:1. I suspect there is a genetic component to this topic, as people lost their melanin as they migrated North. This suggests a mutation to increase D3 production with reduced irradiation.

As I'm vegan, I use the mushroom derived D2 and recently the Lichen derived D3. Since the Lichen D3 is a bit more expensive, I'm more interested in finding a composite dosage that optimizes my 25OH Vit D levels.

Eventually, I will build a narrow band UVB (290-310nm) UV lamp in my shower, calibrate the output, so I can get my Vit D in ~ 10min of showering. This is a long term project.

Vit D shouldn't be a vitamin, but we live too far north, wear all these clothes, and live in these little boxes all the time.
