It's really surreal living in Chicago, the hometown of President Obama. Everyone on the train was just smiling. We all knew what the other was smiling about. People were more friendly than usual. I listened to the inauguration on NPR. I don't really know how to describe the elation I feel right now. I imagine I feel like a Citizen of Gondor after the defeat of Sauron and the ascention of Aragorn to the throne. I know I know that's a really dorky analogy. I don't really view Obama as the "1st African American President" I view him as the "1st Modern President". He's the 1st multi-cultural, multi-national President. He's the 1st President whose policies and political carreer were shaped *after* the cold war. He's the President that sees America in the Future, and not how it was in the past. He's a transformational figure can literally change the world.
Now, I am hopeful, but I am also not disillusioned by his popularity. I only want one thing to come out of his first term in Office, and that is to accelerate our energy program, to meet the 21st century needs. I am estatic that he mentioned this as a primary goal of his administration no less than 3x in his speech and if he calls for a "Manhatten Project for Energy", I'm going to be the 1st to sign up,even if it's just number crunching. I am still baffled that we use 100 year old technology, one that is only 10-22% efficient at converting enegy to locomotion, as our primary mode of transportation. Russia's decision to simply shut off the pipeline to Europe underscores how important energy self-sufficiency is.
We'll see what happens.
