This is where I will be after all the bands:
I would have loved to go to Convergence in Portland, but WGT has replaced Convergence in terms of seeing my scattered friends and amazing bands and revelling into the wee hours of the night.
Fewer and fewer of my friends are going to Convergence and more and more to WGT. More of them have figured out that when you factor in everything from Food, to cab rides vs tram, hotel rates and other costs. WGT isn't much more than going to Convergence, especially if you have to cross the US to get there.
I used to go to Convergence, because it was different from a festival, but now it's trying hard to be a festival. As a festival, it simply cannot compete with european festivals.
I went to Convergence Last year instead of the Treffen. I can't miss 2 years in a row. Besides, in all the years
scaryladysarah & I have been friends, we have never been to the Treffen together.
The thing about the Treffen is that it is soooo massive, that everyone creates their own little gatherings within the Megafest. The problem with Convergence is that it is too big and too small at the same time. It's too big insofar that there's not as much intimacy as Convergences past, but it is not big enough that everyone you don't know to become "noise" .
I remember my 1st few hours of the Treffen. I was standing outside the Agra, and there was soo much eye candy that after an hour, it was kind of like "learned helplessness" such that you realized there was simply too much and just gave up. Everyone you didn't know just became "black noise".
Depending on how my cards fall, I will probably just pop in and out for the Treffen and come back to Europe later in Summer for some other festival, most likely the
Lumos Festival. I've convinced
scaryladysarah to go with me. It was easy! Who could resist a festival that has the unique distinction of being "The Northernmost Gothic Festival in the World!"
You don't know how much I need this vacation. I am about to embark on one of the biggest adventures in my life, but I will save that for a less public entry.
