As humans, we are powerless to see outside of our own spheres of consciousness. Since there is no real overlap between these spheres, at times we are forced to question whether those around us are truly conscious at all or if they simply series of coincidences which manifest themselves as intelligent life. In light of these uncertainties, the notion to place the needs of others before one's own desires can at times seem utterly absurd. At other times however, it can give the feeling that one has a purpose greater than personal satisfaction. But are such feelings delusional? Does "love" mean that one cares about someone else independent of caring about oneself, or does it mean that one cares for another because they care about themself? Do we love others because of how it makes them feel or because of how it makes us feel? If I sacrifice to make her happy simply because I want her to be happy, am I being selfless or forgoing one desire to fulfill another?
