Freeform fic, anyone?

Just 'cause I'm in the mood to write I was wondering if anyone was up to a freeform fiction challenge. Basically, I'll start off a story, give a basis for a world and my character, then the next person picks it, introducing their character. You can expand on the world as you see fit, but each person who follows you must incorporate elements that you put in if it applies to their character in some way.

To make it a little easier you can incorporate elements from existing fandoms but try to make it your own. The world and my character will be inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower series. The reason I chose this is because it mixes sci-fi, fantasy, old west and medieval times, so there's plenty of room to expand and do your own thing.

Fic begins here.

The world has moved on...

Technology had reached an astounding high-point, wondrous machines, artificial intelligences... but with more advanced conveniences came more advance weapons. The Great War left few alive, nearly every major city destroyed. Those left began again, most choosing to leave the technology that survived to rust. But some... some chose to hang on to the computers and gadgets, to live in the steel and glass cities that were still inhabitable.

Those that shunned the creations of the Old Ones, recreated a past nearly forgotten and magics long since chased from the world by science have once again found a place here.

In the kingdom of Gilaan, King Roland's only son, Marcus, is about to take the journey West. It is a trial every gunslinger must face.

Marcus saddled his horse, placing his sword in its scabbard. The sword was his primary weapon, the twin pistols at his hips would be used only as a last resort. They were a symbol, telling those he came upon that he was a gunslinger, a keeper of the laws and protector of this land. Very few working guns still existed in the world and only three kinds of people had them: the very rich, thieves who stole them from the very rich, and gunslingers.

Marcus glanced back to see his mother looking down from her room in the east tower of the castle. She turned from the window and walked out of sight.

"She'll get over it, son," King Roland said. "She knows this is a journey you must take. She might not like it but she does understand."

Marcus nodded. "I will return, father. I will come back from the West."

Pride shone in the king's eyes. "I know you will. You are a better gunslinger than I was at your age."

Marcus bowed his head at the compliment. "Thankee-sai."

Straightening, he looked out at the courtyard outside the stables and wondered where the others were. They were due to depart shortly.
