A professor from Simon Fraser University (SFU), Dr. Bozena Kaminska, has been given the opportunity to present some of her work at the WIRED NextFest. The technology that she will be showcasing is the "Contactless Heart Monitoring". Using Radar technology she is able to detect heart rate and respiration from a sensor that is pointed in the direction of the intended person. This technology can be applied to many different areas:
Monitoring elderly in a healthcare or home settings, to automatically alert a healthcare professional if something life threatening is detected
Monitoring infants at home for early detection of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), when the infant stops breathing instantaneously for no apparent reason
Pilots or truckers traveling long distances to monitor if the person is falling asleep - both breathing and heart rate patterns change
Security checks - as people pass through security, monitoring their heart rate and respiration as indicators to see if they are lying or not when answering questions
Countless others
There are also other technologies that she will be showing at NextFest, such as very low powered, miniaturized wireless network components including sensors.
There will be a plasma screen set-up to show the technology when someone comes to the booth and is used for demonstrations. This screen will display the heart beating, the heart rate and raw data signal and then the filtered data from the actual device.
A second plasma screen will be used to run the flash programs continuously, to show the different applications for this technology. We are not only looking for someone to showcase Dr. Kaminska's technology, but also their own abilities at the Wired conference. The person chosen will obtain exposure at Wired conference, where thousands of people, companies and researchers will be walking through and looking at these exhibits.
