Bro2 passed his degree in science-type stuff with flying colours, which meant he got to wear a very colourful cape (as opposed to my really unsatisfactory drab grey), shake hands with Jean-Luc Picard and sit right behind Richard Dawkins, who was the honorary doctorate of the day. Even though my philistine of a brother didn't actually know who Richard Dawkins was. Patrick Stewart quoted Shakespeare in his address and later, after the ceremony, he walked right past me. Close enough to lick. Luckily, I resisted the tempatation and just settled for an embarrassingly oh-my-god-it's-really-him look. It was a pleasant surprise to see Richard Dawkins, as none of us knew the programme, so when he was announced, Mam (who actually knew who he was) and I exchanged disbelieving grins.
On a more serious note, the day could have gone quite badly. It was a 4 hour trip, starting at 6am, to Huddersfield and in the car were my parents (stressing), my grandparents (stress-inducing), Sis, Bro1 and myself. The TomTom broke at my flat when Mam opened the door too quickly to escape my grandfather and knackered the charging lead. Bro2 was also stressing and hadn't actually decided where he was going to meet us, so that was fun. And on a personal note, he'd done very well in his degree and there was a real worry that I'd be a cunt about it. Barring a few rows and more tongue-chewing than the Victorian era, the day was fantastic. I mean: Patrick fucking Stewart was sitting right there and he did Shakespeare! That's a dream of mine realised now...
Definitely a good day and it reminded me just how lucky I am to have a loving family. OK, so they irritate the hell out of me but we get on much better than it feels.
