Title: Happy Birthday, Gene
Pairings: Sam/Gene
Rating: White Cortina (how the hell did that happen?)
Word Count: 400
Warnings: The fluff might give you a toothache. Also, this is rushed and as such, is unbeta'd, so any mistakes are down to me completely.
Summary: It's Gene's birthday.
Author's Notes: Written for very special birthday girls, talkingtothesky and lozenger8. I hope you like it, sweeties.

Sam was never good at remembering birthdays. You would think he would have been, the picky pain that he invariably was, but no. It really wasn't something he prioritised, especially his own. You can probably add that to the long list of reasons why Sam Tyler failed at relationships and his last relationship was proof positive.

But that was before Gene Hunt came crashing into his life, turning it upside down and every which way, getting into his head and under his skin like no lover (my god, even now it seems strange) ever could. Sam hadn't even known he was gay before meeting Gene (great detective work there, Sam) and he definitely never thought that this boorish, quasi-Neanderthal, larger-than-life person who self-appoints himself “The Gene Genie” (not exactly the most subtle way of telling people you're gay there, Gene) would be his idea of bliss, but there it is.

Which is why Sam is now standing at the kitchen counter, covered in flour (don't ask) and baking a birthday cake. Every detail is perfectly planned (Sam is still Sam, no matter who he's shagging). He has Ray and Chris keeping Gene distracted and away from the station, Annie and June decorating CID, and Phyllis making sure that everyone attends. Even Vince and Geoff have offered to pitch in and help by doing various random tasks that everyone else is too busy to do.

It's half seven now and everyone not staying for the party has gone home. The lights are off and silence falls all through the room, ready for the echo of “Surprise!”, which isn't likely to be much of a surprise to any detective worth his salt, but that's all part of the fun. As planned Gene is escorted into CID, followed by Ray and Chris and even acts surprised when the lights went on and everyone shouted “Surprise!” Sam knows he isn't, but acts that way anyway for Sam's benefit.

Everyone is either pissed, preoccupied, or both and no one had noticed when Sam had pulled Gene into his office for a quick snog.

“Happy Birthday, Gene”, he said when they pulled apart. Gene just smiles back (that honest, beautiful smile that makes Sam fall in love with him every time) and replies “thank you, Sammy”.

Sam was never good at remembering birthdays, but there's a first time for everything.
