A couple of days ago, I overheard a conversation, or one side of it. Shawn was standing in the doorway of the office of a couple of our media and usability specialists. to start with, i've read Hitchen's book. the presupposition or as you say, "theme" that every war ever fought was started over religion is media fodder. i know you said "is not too far off" so you could use the semantic loop-hole to back away from the hilarity of that statement, but come on! crack open a history book and look for yourself. how could you say you couldn't find one "so far"?:

WW1 was started by an assassination
WW2 was started because of the Nazis taking over Poland
Spanish-American war was started over land that belonged to Mexico
Korean war started over a split on whether the country should be communist
Vietnam was was started over the same reason
Chaco War started over a region thought to be rich in oil
War of the Triple Alliance started over physical power
...or any of these wars started over land grabs:
War of the Pacific
Punic Wars
Spanish Civil War
Napoleonic Wars
Peloponnesian War
...and don't forget the many many wars in Japan and China between the warlords trying to unite the countries...or how about the
Roman Empire, who started many wars for land and power

Hitchens is a doofus out to sell a lot of books to people who believe the absence of God and religion will bring about love, freedom, and eventually peace among mankind. How do you defend that?

I find it interesting that the last 100 years, which many consider to be the most God-less, were the worst as far as human life lost due to war. So how about we find someone willing to write a book about how Atheists and the Godless are the ones with blood on their hands?
