I've been in New Zealand for a week now. Got in on Tuesday, absolutely knackered. I didn't get any sleep between Sunday morning (Drogheda) and Melbourne (God knows when). Emirates food lives up to and exceeds all of the steroetypes for that of an airline.
Only now recovering form the jet lag, in that I can now stay awake through dinner and even a bit beyond so I'm finally getting into the swing of things. Start work at nine and go through to 4 (finish early because of the early winter nights. There's lots of menial tasks to be done - ditch digging, gorse clearing, fence removal and wood collecting plus a few more important tasks like insulating the house floor and taking care of the drainage on the looong drive way.
There are 7 others here at the moment (this is the off season). The owners, a Kiwi and German couple, 2 volunteers who have been here for a few months and 3 Slovakians who arrived a week before I did. No one else is expected to arrive for a few weeks though volunteers do turn up unexpectedly. There will be more here by the end of August.
It doesn't rain as much as I'd expected here, but it is very humid which means that it's impossible to dry anything unless it's on the stove. It's absolutely freezing at nights since, as well as being quite close to Antartica and being in Winter, the house is on the top of a mountain.
So far been on one of the walks in another park. Went almost to the top of the highest peak in the area before vertigo got me - there were a few surprisingly vertical stretches for a walking route. Going sking next week - leaving on sunday and gone for a week.
This is the first internet access I've had since I got here and it is going to be a rare thing. I'd post a link to some pictures but the computersm in the internet cafe I'm using don't support digital camera connections. I've filled up the cameras memory already so unless I get a memory card today there won't be any pictures taken for a long while.
