Garden Updates

I finally broke down and rented a tiller to take to Rajeev's place. It was worth the trip; the soil is much better prepared now, and it was a hell of a lot easier than mucking with it myself. I still can't help but wonder if I should have just bought a digging fork rather than rent the tiller, but whatever. It's done. While I was at Home Depot (the one on Mt. Moriah rents! And is close! I am in love with Old Chapel Hill-Durham Rd) I picked up some tomatoes and peppers to plunk in - Early Girl, which should ripen in 50 days if the deer don't eat them, and just generic Big Green peppers. I wanted to get some hot peppers but they were all out of habaneros. Maybe I'll get some at Southern States today. I also put in some cucumbers, because I really love fresh cukes. And pickles, if I ever get around to making them. I'll have to call Mary and get her killer bread & butter pickle recipe. And I wonder what my mother did with my grandmother's dill pickling crock...

I think deer will be a major factor in the garden, so I tried to impress upon the gentlemen how useful 'marking their territory' might be. Unsurprisingly, they were pretty thrilled to have a reason to pee outside. Let's hope they follow through on that sooner rather than later, or I just might find myself pepperless. The tomatoes aren't as much as a draw, although deer will nom on them, but peppers - especially baby pepper plants - seem to be like candy.

After dropping off the tiller, I high-tailed it over to the GSpot, where Her Excellency and I had a very long and fruitful talk about the wonderful things that could happen to their garden. I seemed to be able to grasp what she wanted pretty well, and while I'd like to research a few more plants, there's more than enough to keep them occupied for the rest of the year and then some. I believe everything will be on hold until after Pennsic, of course, but if some Baronial fighter practices involve weilding mulch forks rather than swords, don't look at me. I had nothing to do with it... dum de dum de dumm.... O:)

The Gs then fed me a frickin' awesome dinner of local grass-fed steak, garlic risotto, and fresh local green salad. AWESOME. I want that risotto recipe! It looked so easy and tasted so yum! I also got to hear the story of how they got married, which was pretty sweet and romantic. Dinner and a story. It was good.

Today I need to work on sketching up garden plans for Tommy's, the Gs, and Heian Cottage. I also want to go grocery shopping and strawberry picking, which means I will probably stop out at Tommy's and see how things are going out there. And then, of course, there's stabbing. Let's hope that goes better than Tuesday did.
