my yuletide letter 2014
Dear Yuletide Writer,
I'm very excited to be taking part in Yuletide after some time of not writing much (if anything) now that I’m excited about writing again. I hope my letter will help with your story if you need it, so I have provided some prompts alongside my general notes in case you're the kind of writer to prefers to have them, but please don't think I'll be disappointed if you don't use any of them. Feel free to take as little or as much as you like from this.
Things that I love include: Shenanigans and banter, people going on adventures/road trips, characters learning things about each other that they didn’t previously but also realising they always knew each other, pretending to be a couple for dubious reasons, unrequited feelings that are secretly not unrequited. I love AU fics as well, from historical to space travel to people working in a flower shop, I will read it. Also, I’m happy to read any rating.
Friday Night Lights; Luke Cafferty, Becky Sproles
I actually requested these two the last time I took part in Yuletide so here is a link to that post - most of what I said about them then still applies, though the show is now finished canon for these two characters is a little different. There’s still so little fic for them out there though, which is why I had to request them. These two can be so angsty but also so sweet so I’d really love an exploration of their feelings about their own lives and each other. In terms of other characters, one of my favourite things in the fifth season was Becky’s relationship with Mindy and how she became a part of that family so I would adore seeing that friendship featured. I also loved Luke’s friendships with Vince and Tinker so including them would be great too. Feel free to include characters that didn’t really interact with Becky and Luke normally either, this is one show where I actually love all the main characters so I’d be happy to see anyone turn up.
Prompts: I would love to see some future fic - what happens to their lives years after we left them, whether that be them making it work or drifting apart. How much do their lives turn into what they expected their futures to be, and also how different? Exploration of the things we skipped over during the show/missing scenes would also be much appreciated, especially in the period post season four but before they actually started dating. Or, what if they met completely differently - not at high school, but as adults, on their way back to Dillon and not happy about it; what would they think of each other then?
If you've not seen it before: You might have heard people say there’s more to Friday Night Lights than just football and it really is so true. For me the show is about people and the town and just growing up. That probably doesn’t sell it very well, but I find it hard to explain why I love it so much, it’s just good at making you feel all the emotions and gets you very invested in so many different characters. It ran for five seasons, and while my requested characters only turn up in the last two (both of which were 13 episodes long) if you are going to watch it I feel it should be watched in its entirety (just don’t give up at the sub-par season 2. Everything else is beautiful.).
The 100; Clarke Griffin, Bellamy Blake
I'd been getting back into fic for the last year but these two are what got me back in a major way so suffice to say I have a lot of feelings. They are such interesting characters and can both be so dark and so light. My favourite thing on the show is how their characters start at such different places but as they begin to understand one another they work so well together and become so interlinked, and that great dynamic is what I'd love to see most in a fic. I tend to read mostly AU fics for these two, both canon divergence and all the different world AUs, but I would honestly be happy with anything. If you don't want to go all out shippy that's fine with me, some of my favourite fics for haven't involved them getting together, their growing friendship/dependence on one another lights up my life. As far as including other characters, I love Raven, Octavia, Jasper and Monty so I'd be very happy for any or all of them to be featured prominently in the story, but I wouldn't mind anyone making an appearance.
Prompts: A way they might have met on the Ark (either canonish-compliant or not), indie songwriters AU (this prompt may be a result of Nashville and its songs like 'If I Didn't Know Better' & 'Lately'), something focusing on Clarke as the fighter and Bellamy as the brains, anything involving Bellamy reading and Clarke painting, Guardians of the Galaxy AU!
If you've not seen it before: If you like post-apocalyptic YA fiction, this show is based on a book of that genre. I haven't actually read the books, and I've heard there's more than a few changes, though I think it'd be fair to say the concept of sending 100 juvenile delinquents down to Earth years after it was abandoned because their Space Station is running out of oxygen remains the same. There are stories on the ground and in Space (though personally I find the stories with the kids on the ground much more compelling than the ones with the adults). It took me a few episodes before I started to get really into it, but I think it improves a lot over the course of the series and the 1st season is only 13 episodes so wouldn't take long to watch. Season 2 just started but I live in the UK so I might not have seen it all myself by Christmas (though I don't mind spoilers as I will be keeping myself updated).
Enlisted; Derrick Hill, Erin, Randy Hill, Jill Perez
Firstly, if we got matched on this then yay you're someone else who actually watched this delightful show that was taken from us far too soon! It's so happy and fun and I would be so thrilled with a gen fic that just featured as many of the main & recurring characters as you wanted and shenanigans. Honestly, this is one where I really wanted to request more than 4 characters because I do adore them all, and feel a little harsh that I haven’t included Pete to be honest. The reason I nominated these four in particular are because Derrick is my favourite of the brothers (that sarcastic bastard with one move!), and I really adored his relationship with Erin and her son so I would like for her to be featured in the story in some way. And Jill’s amazing and Randy’s hilarious so, sorry Pete, you would have been character #5 if I could’ve had one. (Or maybe #6, after Cindy. Just so many loveable characters!)
Prompts: Future fic either very shortly after the finale ended (just what did brothers Randy and Pete do about those emotions for Jill? Personally, I think Randy/Jill could’ve had potential), or years later (Perhaps Derrick does become a photojournalist? Maybe he meets Erin again in Washington? Jill obviously becomes very successful in the army, but what exactly is in Randy’s future? - Side note: if you are a fan of Suburgatory, you should know I would be more than happy if you somehow made Randy Hill and Ryan Shay the same person or something and Tessa Altman turned up)). AU set in literally any work environment where the whole gang are a bunch of misfits and there are lots of shenanigans.
If you've not seen it before: Hilarious, sweet and emotional half hour comedy that got cancelled after just 1 13 episode season that I would highly recommend (just to watch it even, never mind considering writing fic for it).
