My cousin & I arrived at the Roanoke Civic Center at around 6:30 PM. Luckily, the lines were moving kind of quick, so we didn't have to stand in line for so long waiting to get in. The only complaint was the line to get the wristbands to be on the floor...we had to wait there for about 20 minutes or so, but it was worth it. We managed to get in about the 8th or 9th row back on the floor, and what a great view! The venue appeared to be near max capacity. Only one section on band’s right hand side, behind the VIP section, up near the top was blocked off. The Civic Center holds 20,000 people, and I would say there was roughly 16,000 - 17,000 in attendance. Great turnout. ... I didn’t manage to get a full set list of any of the bands, so I will do the best I can to remember as much as possible from each band!
Anyway, around 7:40 PM or so, the crowd began to come alive and move closer to the stage. The lights dimmed at 7:55 PM and the show began to get underway...
SHINEDOWN began the show by opening with some sort of intro that made me think of an “out of this world” scene. The lead singer came out with a megaphone in hand and asked us how we were doing, and got a great response. Excellent way to kick off the show by using the “siren effect” from the megaphone to lead into the first song, “Stranger Inside”. After the first song, he joked with some people in the front row about some things pertaining to “You guys want my shoes? Is that what it is?” and thanked us again for coming out, and said that they “are there doing the concert because of the us, the fans.”, then proceeded to do another song, after which he joked some more with the people in the front & showed them his leg & asked “Which person was it here that wanted to see my leg?” Their lead singer then talked to the crowd again and said that they were going to play us a song tonight that they hadn’t been playing on the recent shows, but they were “going to play it for us tonight” - Song: “Burning Bright” SHINEDOWN did an excellent set that lasted about 40 - 45 minutes. The set included: “Fly From The Inside”, “Burning Bright”, “Left Out”, “Stranger Inside”, “45", and a couple of other songs. During part of the set, their guitarist threw out some CDs to the crowd...they got to around the 5th or 6th row as well. The amazing part of SHINEDOWN’s set was definitely when Brad Arnold came out about half-way through “45" and performed the remainder of the song with them. The crowd went nuts when Brad came out! It was great to see that interaction with the guys, as well as the crowd. This is one of the several highlights of the night! The final song in their set was “Left Out”, and they dedicated it to the crowd by saying “We don’t want any of you feeling left out - this song is for you!” SHINEDOWN proceeded to thank us again for coming out, and then threw out some water bottles they had drank out of, some drum sticks that were used during the set, and some guitar picks. Amazing performance by these guys, and excellent music!
** The guys from SHINEDOWN pretty much wore the same thing...jeans & a shirt of some sort. Their lead singer had on what appeared to be a fitted sweater of sorts, and had a chain, along with the earpiece wire hanging out of his back pocket. He’s got a great hair dye color! It’s like a crimson red color.
*Intermission for breakdown/setup for TANTRIC* (I chatted with the people in front of me, a girl named Brandy & some guys that were with her - cool people to chat with!)
TANTRIC came out to an excellent reaction from the crowd, and kicked off their set with “Astounded”, from their first album. After the song, Hugo thanked us for coming out, and said he “hoped we were all having a great time.” Which we definitely were! The crowd reaction was great, and I believe there was a “Fuck yeah!” comment made by him after the shout out from the crowd. He then spoke about their new album coming out & said they were going to play some new songs from the new album coming out in February, then they were “going to play some of the older shit”. They then played some new material for everyone. During one part of one of the new songs, something went wrong with the microphones, and no sound was being projected through them. TANTRIC’s guitarist realized this, I believe, and went back to check out his amplifiers and such, but nothing worked. About 2 minutes, and the guys kept playing anyway. Finally, about 3/4 of the way through the song, the microphones came back on, and the crowd gave a big applause & shout. Their final song of the night was “Breakdown”. After the set, they threw out some drum sticks, guitar picks, and a couple of water bottles. TANTRIC’s set included: “Hey Now”, “Astounded”, “Breakdown”, “Mourning”, as well as some other new songs. TANTRIC’s set lasted about the same as SHINEDOWN’s set, 40 - 45 minutes. Excellent performance by these guys as well...I’m looking forward to the new album now!
** The guys in TANTRIC had on some normal attire: Lead singer wore a white muscle shirt w/ leather pants. Guitarist #1 wore some jeans & a white muscle shirt. Guitarist #2 had on a pair of jeans, and a t-shirt that said “Loser” on it. Drummer - shorts & no shirt. Bass player had on a t-shirt & jeans and also came out wearing a straw cowboy hat which he later took off during the set...
~$~ My side-note: During the TANTRIC set, Brandy decided that she wanted to crowd surf. Her buddies and I helped her up and we were holding her going through the crowd. We thought people had her so we let her go...she fell down, and kicked a girl in the head when she fell. The girl kicked her while she was trying to get up, and Brandy got pretty pissed off at the girl...I tried to grab her & calm her down, but the girl came after Brandy - I let her go. A fight broke out, and Brandy won it! I think I was the first one there to hi-five her & say “Nice shot!” afterwards. The crowd just gathered in a circle & watched. The girl Brandy beat down had to be picked up off the floor! She couldn’t get up on her own ...Nice going, Brandy! :-) This was one of the highlights of my night as well!
*Intermission for breakdown/setup for 3 DOORS DOWN* (Chatted with Brandy & fellow people during this bit, and called a friend of mine up that couldn’t make it to the show.)
The start of the show was wild! The crowd went nuts when the lights dimmed for 3 DOORS DOWN. The show kicked off by having a big white curtain put up in front of the stage so no one could see what was going on (unless you had a side-seat in the stands). They used some interesting lighting effects on the white curtain. Some sort of spiral projections that were teal, purple, green, and blue alternating colors. The show started off with “Duck And Run”...and right as Brad shouted “yeeeeeaaaah”...the curtain fell & the band is shown to all of Roanoke! 3 DOORS DOWN completely rocked the entire place last night. After the first song, Brad asked us all how we were doing, and got the loudest shout out I heard all night. He thanked us for coming out and talked to us a little bit. They did a combination of new & old songs, and after each one Brad would say “Thank you very much, my friends.”, and got a great crowd response each time. The band had a few different backdrops they used during the set. It started with the “Away From The Sun” block logo, then when they started some older songs, mainly “Kryptonite”, the backdrop changed to the “3" shield logo. The last backdrop of the night was the “Sun” image w/ the 3 DOORS DOWN logo inside of it. Everyone seemed to really come alive during the 3 DOORS DOWN set. Crowd surfing became heavy, and everyone had a fist in the air all the time. Brad mentioned a bit about the live CD, “Another 700 Miles”, and said they were going to play “It’s Not Me”, and he wanted us to let them know if we liked the song, and got us all to scream & throw a fist in the air...then after the first one, he said “I think you can do it a little louder this time - LET ME HEAR IT!”...somewhere in this time-frame is where I lost my voice even more! I can’t find the words to describe how cool this show was! It was just simply amazing. The band played for about 1 hour & 50 minutes (but they could’ve gone all night for all I cared! Great stuff!) Dan’s drum solo was just insane! That is the coolest drum solo I have ever seen! I don’t know if anyone that was at the Roanoke show heard me or not, but after the crowd had toned down a bit & it was getting a little quiet, I yelled out “Daniel fucking rules!” with everything I had, and what little bit of voice I had left. :-P 3 DOORS DOWN’s set included: “Duck & Run”, “When I’m Gone”, “Kryptonite”, “The Better Life”, “The Road I’m On”, “Changes”, “Not Enough”, “It’s Not Me”, Daniel’s 6 minute drum solo, and a bunch of others I can’t remember right now...I’d say the band did roughly 15 songs, then came back out & did 3 more for an encore. The encore presentation included: “That Smell”, “Here Without You”, and “Loser” with a guest appearance from the lead singer of TANTRIC. The band thanked us again for coming out, and said they’d see us on the next trip. After the show, Daniel threw out roughly 6 drum sticks to the crowd, and Chris & Matt threw out some guitar picks to people. Everyone stood there cheering for the guys for about five minutes after the show was over.
** The guys wore some pretty good outfits for the show: Brad had on some greyish black pants with a charcoal grey looking button down collar shirt, not tucked in. He later put on a black NY Yankees fitted baseball cap. Todd wore a pair of jeans with a semi-shiny button up shirt, unbuttoned about ½ way. Daniel had on a black sleeveless t-shirt w/ an American flag on it, and some jeans. It also looked like he had on a black hat flipped around backwards. Matt had on a blue button up collar shirt & some jean-type pants on. Chris had on jeans and some sort of shiny blue collar shirt that buttoned. After the show, Chris came out wearing a bluish-green button up collar shirt & blue jeans. Daniel then came out after the show and had on blue jeans, an “Independent” hoodie, and a baseball cap underneath the hood pulled up over his head.
~ Special thanks to Heather for the information on the clothing during the live show! I also added what I could remember of them as well. Much appreciation to you Heather for helping out!
After the show, my cousin & I made my way around the Roanoke Civic Center, and waited patiently in the cold rain to meet the guys. There were roughly 20 - 30 people waiting to meet them. Chris came out first to sign stuff and take some pictures with the fans that were there. His first comment to us was “You guys are crazy for standing out here in this weather.” Hey, we’re dedicated fans, we don’t mind! I got to shake his hand, chat with him, get a couple of things signed, & get a picture. My cousin also got a picture with him. I joked with Chris after taking a picture with him, and asked him what kind of beer he was drinking, to which he replied “Tonight it’s Ultra.” I wasn’t expecting an answer, but he gave me one, which was totally cool. I thanked him for taking time out of his busy schedule & posting on the message boards to answer the questions we ask there, as well. He talked to everyone there & said that he had things he had to do before they left, and he was going to get Dan & Todd out to see us. Dan came out about 15 minutes later to sign stuff & take photos. His first comment to us was “Hey! How’s it going you guys?!” He signed autographs & took pictures. My cousin & I got a photo with him, and I got an autograph. Funny story: Dan’s sharpie quit working when he started to sign an autograph for me...I had a sharpie in my pocket & said “Here...use mine!” ...I brought my own, yes...but it came in handy! Anyway, a few minutes later Dan gave the sharpie he originally had to a guy there that asked him for it, and he, as did Chris, rubbed a pregnant girl’s belly when she asked them if they would. That was really cool of them! I talked to Dan about his drum solo, and the response he gave me on the board about learning to play drums, and I thanked him for posting on the board in response to everyone else as well. I asked him about what he thought of Roanoke, to which he said “Well, I woke up at noon, went to the Y and worked out for a little bit, came back here & practiced...so I really didn’t see much of it.” Before I left I shook hands with Dan & told him to “keep on rockin’ & I’ll be looking forward to seeing them in concert again sometime”. He said “Have fun, take care, and good luck with the drums!” - These guys are so down to earth when you talk to them, they don’t come out with that “I’m a rock star” attitude. They come out to hang out and talk to you like an everyday person would. ~ I respect the guys very much, and I’m glad I can say that I’ve met some of the nicest people in the music business...
Getting to meet some of the guys from the band - that’s my best highlight of the night!
...I don’t know if Todd came out or not, because I left before he ever came out...I was freezing cold, just standing outside in the cold & rain with no jacket on, just the “HERO” t-shirt and jeans...
Overall, this show was just amazing! I, by far, got my money’s worth, plus more! The energy level from all three bands was off the charts! Just great! If you haven’t seen a live 3 DOORS DOWN concert yet, you have no idea what you’re missing. I’m hooked now...these guys rock! I look forward to seeing more concerts from them in the future...I just need to get my voice back first. :-)
