“Do we really have to go that far?” the boy asked, eyeing the darkness ahead with distrust.

“Scared?” the girl turned around to grin teasingly at him, though with the lack of light he couldn’t see much of it. Before he could retort, a weak beam of light appeared in front of her and the voice of another boy rang out

“What are you standing around here for?” without waiting for a reply he continued, “There’s something back here. Something big. Couldn’t see what though.”

The girl picked up her pace before he could even finish the sentence, the boy hurried after her.

It was big. Even with the combined powers of three flashlights they couldn’t be sure of what exactly it was. It looked metal, brownish or maybe yellowish from what they could see in the dim light, with dull sheen. It didn’t wholly lie on the ground, but seemed to be standing on stout legs. The one in front of them was shaped like an animal foot.

“Looks like a statue,” the second boy commented before grabbing a hold of it and attempting to hoist himself up on it.

“Don’t break your neck,” the girl muttered distractedly, moving along the ‘statue’, her hand trailing against the side of it.

The first boy started walking opposite direction of her, also feeling the thing with his hand. The colour seemed to change as he moved along. To him it looked like dark green, but he wasn’t sure. He lighted the thing ahead with his flashlight. What he saw made him hurry forward - it had a head. The exact shape of it was hard to see, but was on scale with the body. He crept closer to it, his hand landing to rest on the side of it. Slowly he slid his hand under its chin as he himself came to stop in front of the face. Awed, he looked into the eyes as big as both of his fists put together. And then to his utmost horror the eyes suddenly glowed brightly.

Inspector Santiago Hierro was used to dealing with the messes left behind by the restless youth of the city. He was also used to them getting lost from time to time - mostly because they hadn’t learned to hold their liquor just yet - and him going out to find them. So when he was informed of the disappearance of three teens - almost adults actually - he didn’t even blink an eye and sent out some cadets to check out the usual places drunk teenagers ended up it. Just as usual, he thought as he headed out of the police building to join in the search. As soon as he entered the sunlight it became clear to him that this would not be usual at all.

The woman wasn’t exactly trying to catch attention, but his eyes zeroed in on her instantly. She was dressed casually - dark jeans, well-worn leather jacket over floral print top, comfortable sneakers. Her hair was blue, obviously died, judging from the reddish roots. Her face was weathered, crow’s feet decorating the corners of her eyes. The eyes themselves were sharp though as they looked straight at Santiago.

He sighed and walked up to her.

“Mid-life crisis?” he asked, indicating her hair. She simply gave him a half-hearted smirk and turned to gaze at the mountains just at the edge of the city.

“Someone’s gone missing,” it was a statement, not a question and he noticed her body tensing with each passing moment.

“You have a clue where they are,” that wasn’t a question either.

“I have to hurry. I only stopped by to let you know,” she started to walk away, but was stopped by a shout from Santiago.

“Tris!” he called, “Take Andrew and Val with you. If I have to explain all this I’d rather have a believable source.”

“Have them run after me to the caves, I don’t have too much time to spare,” she ran off as Santiago fumbled to get his phone out. He paused for a second to watch her retreating, then shook his head sadly.

“This is going to be a mess.”

The police station was abuzz as Santiago attempted to console three grieving families at the same time.

“I’m sorry, but we can’t send anyone to retrieve the bodies. The caves are too unstable to send anyone down there. It would only end with more death,” he was saying for what seemed like thousanth time this evening.

Andrew and Val were watching him from a secluded corner they had found for themselves.

“Poor guy,” Andrew commented, eyeing Santiago with concern, “I hope they won’t start blaming him for this.”

“I’m more afraid they’ll start blaming us,” Val muttered darkly, then bit her lip and turned to Andrew, “Andy. Those kids? They’ll be okay, right?”

“Don’t worry,” Andrew assured her, “I’ve met Tris before and she’s no bad guy. Besides, dad trusts her so they must be okay.”

“Yeah,” Val shifted uncomfortably, “But still, that thing...”

“Won’t hurt them.”

“I hope you’re right. I really hope you’re right,” she leaned unhappily against the wall and watched Santiago explain everything all over again.
