Whatever the psychology behind it, it's pretty much irrefutable that you see a lot more cyclists flouting and / or totally unaware of traffic laws than motorists. Part of the irritation is that the cyclists in such situations *are* breaking a social taboo, but beyond that... We are inundated with material telling us that we have to be more aware of bicyclists, that we must share the road, that we have to be more aware and more careful to avoid hurting them... So it's kind of a slap in the face, especially to those of us who *do* give a damn and who *do* keep an eye out, when cyclists don't play by the rules and are so cavalier with their own safety.
In short, when someone rides unsafely and doesn't follow traffic laws it makes *my* job as a responsible, careful driver trying not to turn you into a pile of spokes and flesh much more difficult. And yeah, I *do* mind that.
