Dear Becca Cooper, I feel the need to defend My and part of Alex's position on your argument of handling poverty.
First of all, I have never once said people in poverty are lazy. NEVER. I didn't say it today, before, and I will not say it later. People in poverty who are lazy act that way because of our current welfare system that hands out donations and does little to provide incentive to work harder. I have never once believed they're financial hardship automatically makes them lazy, that's downright ridiculous.
Also, you seem to have gotten away from the argument. No one is saying it's not the government's responsibility to try and help people in poverty. All we were saying is that one: the government should provide opportunities to rise out of poor communities (which I fully believe Barack will do) instead of giving out money or things other people had to work hard for, which encourages apathy among the impoverished. Giving an opportunity forces the impoverished to choose between living their unfortunate life, or to take the path to a better one. And who will choose the former? If you are handed things, then a culture of assuming the government will take care of you no matter how hard you work will develop.
And the biggest thing that you cannot ignore is that while it is an ethical and moral thing to help those in financial need, there will ALWAYS be those on the low end of the scale in a capitalist system. The free market is based on inequality. As one constituent rises, more often than not, another is stuck or falling backwards. No matter the race, social conception, or supposed exploitation, there will always be a level of unequal pay among citizens, resulting in poverty. Unless you change one of the core fundamental truths of the American economy, then you will always have poverty. But of course that doesn't mean we should stop fighting for those who are in need. And I do believe poverty in some cases can spark people into becoming something great, and only in a free market economy would that inspiration, that drive, pay off fully for that person.
Also, Barack Obama is a HUGE proponent of providing opportunity instead of giving handouts. Plans dealing with Education, Health Care, and Poverty all are based around that concept. It is why he transcends party lines. He is one of the most firm believers in hard work to ever exist in my eyes, and yet he is willing to provide every opportunity to succeed to those who need it. YES WE CAN!
