It had been too long.

Rayne had left the room, as usual. Namine had waited, as usual. Rayne did not come back -- unusual. Time had stretched on and on, and still the girl's roommate did not come back. Night and terrifying though it was, Namine found herself having to fight to keep herself from opening the door and walking outside the relative safety of the room in search of her friend. It had been far too long, far too long. Perhaps the amount of time seemed larger to her -- fear and concern had a tendency to distort such things. She had no watch, but, in its stead, she had developed a reasonably accurate judgement of the passing of time, and though she was not consciously confident that she was correct in this instance, her subconscious was painfully, painfully certain. And she just couldn't fight that sick feeling, right in the pit of her stomach.

It was this that had made her at last give in to her fingers that so often attempted to sneak their way onto the doorknob. It was no great wonder that she was very cautious as she made her way down the halls, especially with the faceless nurses from the previous night still fresh in her memory. Even though she had travelled all the way to the stairs and down them in breath-held, tip-toed silence and remained unaccosted, she dared not relax. She edged through the dawn room, through the first floor east hallway, into the grand room.... Passing through, she sent just a glance at the entrance hall, out of habit. Nothing was ever there --

Except a person.

She flinched back, automatically dodging behind the wall and out of sight of the doorway. Had she actually seen...?! Was it someone new? Or a ghost? It could be either, and either way, it could be dangerous -- she'd be better off going to the room and waiting for Rayne. Why had she even come out here? If Rayne WAS in trouble, what could she have done, anyway? ...But, wait, if it WAS a new person, then... it would be dangerous for them, too. The little blonde girl bit her lip. Could she really live with herself, if she left someone that didn't know what was going on to fend for themselves at night?

She knew the answer before she even finished asking herself. Still, it paid to be cautious. The girl edged over to the doorframe, placing a hand on it to steady herself. She leaned over just enough to peek around it into the entrance hall, only a few strands of smooth blonde hair and the glimmer of a curious blue eye showing beside the wood.

Curiosity turned to frozen shock as she at last recognized just who it was that had caused her dilemma. There was the sound of a sharp intake of breath, but nothing more -- her vocal chords seemed to have planned a mutiny.
