Ouran High School was known for many things. Prestigious by its own nature, esteemed because of the children that attended and celebrated for the amount of promise those students held. But Ouran was much more than just a school, for within its walls was one of the most illustrious and prominent clubs in existence - the Host Club. Just as defined as the school itself was, but serving a greater purpose.
Nestled in the third music room, the Host Club was currently in session. Swarms of yellow dotted by light hues of blue littered the elegant room. A tall, smiling black haired boy was there to greet guests as they entered and a few other boys were scattered about, entertaining the yellow clad girls who smiled wistfully at them.
For everyone in the room what was happening was a normal occurrence.
Everything was normal around here. Everything from the glittering chandeliers, to the delicate furniture, to ornate paintings and trimmings perched carefully on the walls. There was nothing out of the ordinary, nothing exciting. Which, for a pair of red headed twins meant one thing and one thing only - things were getting boring. Things always got boring and it was time to switch things up a bit.
With but one glance between the brothers they immediately knew what to do - at least for now, just to spice the monotony up a bit. A grin slid onto Kaoru Hitachiin's face and an identical one crept onto his brothers' as they both took out matching hats. The girls around them squealed in excitement as the two slid them on their heads. After much twirling and whipping about each other they came to a stop. Karou and Hikaru leaned casually against each other, pulling gently at their caps.
Entertainment was a fine, practiced, and well refined art for them. With something as simple as a hug shared between two brothers, a simple gesture of affection, they could have girls practically melting into puddles of ooze at their feet. Practiced, refined and perfect. Toying with emotions was nothing but a game to them - one they both were extremely good at.
"It's time for the 'Which One is Hikaru Game'!" They stated in complete unison, sliding their fingers across the rim of their hats.
"Oh! I love this game!" Squealed one of their guests.
Interesting how everyone loved it so much even though no one was ever able to get it right. No one could tell the difference between the two of them - especially when they hid the way they parted their hair.
"Now it's time to guess! Which lovely princess would like to try first?" They asked, leaning forward with sly grins.
"I know! Umm…the one on the left is Hikaru!" Squeaked a small, first year brunette.
Kaoru's eyes slide to his brother, who was moving his eyes to meet his. They looked at each other, sharing a brief, but knowing glance that would be lost on the anxious girls in front of them. Definitely not.
"Sorry, try again!" They grinned widely, twirling about each other once again. A mere formality, because they knew no one would be able to guess right.
Then again, neither twin would ever let them know if they got it right anyway. It would be much too dangerous for both of them.
Amidst the rapid twirling, Kaoru noticed something strange. His brother didn't seem quite right. He was focusing on something else. Carefully he traced his brothers line of sight until he found exactly what it was he was so transfixed by - a certain brown haired host club member, a certain girl who was posing as a boy to pay off her debt. Haruhi had made her entrance and even in the ragged, tired state she was in, she was the only one who ever really piqued their interest. She was the only girl who ever really tested them. The only person besides Tamaki that had made them interested in coming out of their secluded world.
The moment lasted mere seconds, but to Kaoru it felt like a lifetime. Sure, it was his decision to try and push Hikaru away, to help him grow up, to help them both become the people they needed to be, but that didn't mean he had to like it. They stopped spinning and Hikaru slid an arm around his waist, pulling him close. They both grinned widely, but thoughts of the game they were playing were suddenly lost. She was the only one who could tell them apart, after all. She's the only one who'd ever won the game.
One more guess was met with cheshire smiles and once more the twirling began, but as Kaoru took his first step, he slipped.
The room spun around him and he tumbled to the ground, landing hard on his hands and knees. His heart was racing, his cheeks were flushing, and instinctively he reached up his hand so Hikaru could help him up. It took less than a second for him to realize that his hand was going to remain empty.
A sense of dread filled him and he lifted his eyes up from the floor. This was definitely not the Third Music Room and his twin was nowhere to be found.
