Summary: Machi plays the piano and suddenly finds what he's been looking for all this time.

Anna wasn't sure how long she had been walking.

It had been a long time, to be sure--hours, at least. Everything seemed relieving and horrible and surreal, suffused with a hazy dream-like quality that made her wonder if she wasn't indeed asleep after all--wasn't strapped to that terrible cold table again that cradled her neck just so, perhaps anesthetized to the point where she could only dream of freedom. Or perhaps they had opened her head this time, peeled her scalp back and her long blonde hair--it was growing faster than she was ever used to dealing with at home, and probably full of tangles by now--, drilled a hole into her skull to lower in electrodes and force hallucinations that completely overwhelmed whatever was really happening.

Or maybe it was real. On some level, it certainly felt real, the way her legs burned with exertion, and every strained breath burned at her throat, and the maddening feeling of the insect moving inside her that made her want to be sick, or claw into her own stomach and tear it out, even as she ( ... )

Machi continued playing for a few minutes, possibly unaware she was there. The pool of frustration, the raw grating, was seemingly bottomless, exacerbated and relieved by the act of playing, even though neither one made sense in the face of the other, endlessly looping the emotion around. But the sound of footsteps, especially two pairs of them, was not normally the type of thing that escaped his notice, and he turned around slowly after a moment, glancing around the edge of his sunglasses... and freezing. His heart almost seemed to stop from shock and surprise, then leapt, so high it was amazing it didn't simply burst out of him, relief and joy of a kind he hadn't experienced before jumping through him in a sudden moment of unguarded feeling ( ... )

Lorenzo had been willing enough to support the injured woman as they went along. Not that he'd had much of a choice, the procedures and captivity had obviously taken a toll on her just as it had Red and for as emotionally and socially incapable as she might have thought him to be, he was at least smart enough to try and keep her from moving anymore than she had to. The grand room, public as it might be, would probably have to do for that cause, because he wasn't favoring the idea of moving her up another flight of stairs to find her bedroom ( ... )
