Quite frankly, Zetsu was getting worn down. He wasn't sure how long he'd spent outside of the Greenhouse now that it had been opened--he hadn't gone back, not with the quicksand and horribly distorted plants, not with the possibility that he could get locked in again. (Those plants just felt wrong, and he knew it; the sole attempt he'd made to reach out and speak with them, all he had felt was a devastating lack of control, the sort someone might manifest when being controlled by one of Sasori's genjutsus, or possessed....) Either way, it had been quite a while, definitely at least a few days. He'd hardly slept, barely had any chances to eat, could barely even rest for long without having to move on ( ... )

The young trainer blinked through his tears, praying that whoever spoke didn't see them. It wouldn't do to have the Ninth Champion, the brightest star in Kanto, crying like a little baby. He took a few seconds to compose himself, then raised his head.

Standing in front of him was the most unusual Pokemon he had ever seen. It was slightly taller than the average human and shaped quite like one, save for the giant leaves protruding from its neck. It even wore clothes, something Red had only seen the Pokemon of fanatics do.

His curiosity, however, waned just as quickly as it was aroused. A new Pokemon was nothing compared to the gruesome death that Red had a sinking feeling he'd suffer before the night ended.

Wait a second..."You can talk?"

Zetsu noticed the glitter of tears, just barely, though he made no comment on them; the kid looked like he was barely genin-aged, if he even was, (which Zetsu was starting to doubt; he looked a year or two younger) and certainly not like any genin he'd ever seen. And his belt.... The pokéballs (that was what those things were, right?) that lined it caught his eye quickly, and matched the images of them that Mewtwo had shown him; he could feel his hackles raising a little with wary suspicion. So this boy was a trainer, then? He wouldn't need to be able to fight himself, if he had pokémon who he could force to battle for him. Like personal summons, it sounded like, only with less free will....

Still though, even with the paranoia, Red's question managed to make him bristle. That was just rude! Who the hell did this kid think he was? Even Anita hadn't doubted that he could talk, though he supposed whatever monsters she was used to dealing with could talk just fine. And hadn't Mewtwo said that most pokémon couldn't speak in a language ( ... )

Red blinked. "Oh...you must be really smart," he responded. "Or...I'm suddenly really smart." Fear didn't exactly make the trainer the most rational of beings.

The trainer was remotely aware of the other being's reactions to his words, but found himself almost not caring. Weird, for the boy was always concerned with the emotional state of others. If someone wasn't happy, there was something for him to do. That's how it always was.

Not anymore, apparently. Red found himself oddly preoccupied with those immediately around him, for once.

"I'm here because..." he began in a small voice. Young brown eyes traveled to his waist, then raised to Zetsu's, pleading. "Because I don't want to risk them getting hurt. I can't fight, so what else can I do?"

The Leech Seed was good, but it wasn't enough. These hellhounds had an amazing ability to ignore damage dealt to them and keep on going. Not good, as one of them was heading directly for Venusaur. The creature pounced onto the Pokemon, landing on it's back and sinking it's jaws onto the base of Saur's giant flower. The grass-type Pokemon let out a roar, shaking in order to dislodge the dog. Useless spores flew from the flower, serving only to slightly disorient the dog, but it did not loose its grip. Instead, its teeth seemed to sink further, its mouth getting mucus, saliva, and rotting flesh all over the Pokemon.

Panicking, Red knew he had to do something. Zetsu had mentioned the head was a weak spot, but Red didn't think his Pokemon had any attacks capable of cutting or even dismembering a head. 'Maybe blunt force trauma will do the trick,' he thought, readying another Pokeball. "Snorlax, I choose you!" It was risky, as Snorlax was still low on health, but if need be, he could use Rest ( ... )

The hellhound flew off of Venusaur and sailed into Mukuro, filthy claws gashing his arm as they toppled in a heap onto the floor. It set on him in an instant, snapping and snarling, glistening ropes of saliva flying as it barked. In such a close range, illusions were impossible--there would have been no time or concentration to make one, and the dog's savage jaws were already tearing the shaft of his trident asunder.

The remaining two dogs split, one leaping to help assault Snorlax with tooth and claw, the other surging towards Zetsu. Backed against the wall as he was, there was no chance to run; Zetsu simply flung himself into the combat as well as he could, exhausted and in pain, doing his best just to keep up with the beast and try to find an opening to finish it off as he fended off potential mortal blows.
