Rue had some idea of what this place was now.
If the strange, whispering voices hadn't been enough to set her on edge, the atmosphere in the hallway she'd been effectively camping out in had completely changed. There was no obvious danger; nothing approached her from the shadows to eat her or otherwise cripple her, but as she traveled cautiously down the hall, more than once an imagined noise made her jump and turn to face her attacker.
After the umpteenth time a nonexistent rustle startled her, Rue sighed deeply. There's no reason to be afraid, she reminded herself; if someone did attack her, she could take care of herself, couldn't she?
Determined to finish her quest - which, tonight, was getting upstairs to see if anyone else was here (not to escape the oddly unnerving downstairs) - she turned back in the direction of the stairs, and froze.
Outside of that window - what was that-- it looked like a woman, but its face -
It was watching her, and it had no eyes.
Rather calmly for someone who had just seen their first monster, Rue took the stairs only one at a time, not taking her eyes off of the faceless thing at the window. Not until she broke out of its 'sight' did she allow herself to run up the stairs, collapsing on the landing with a shuddery little gasp. What was...? How could it have...?
A few minutes passed, and her panicked breathing slowed. She felt safer up here. The stairwell was just as poorly lit as the halls below, and if anything should have chilled her even more, but for some reason it lacked something that the hallways had had. And the whispering... it seemed to have faded slightly, but perhaps she was just imagining things.
... Yes, just imagining things. The thing downstairs - she had just been a little antsy, that was all. There was probably someone outside who had tried to get her attention, and she had foolishly assumed it was... a creature. She had probably offended whoever it was. For a moment or two, Rue was struck with the urge to go downstairs and apologize, but squashed it. Even if the person outside wasn't malicious, she wasn't going to walk back down there into the dark, unnerving hallway.
... But she could be imagining that too. Perhaps she was simply on edge because she was, as far as she knew, alone in this house?
It was at this point, as Rue was contemplating finding somewhere to sleep and ignore the strange, creepy hallways, that she heard the footsteps.
She practically leapt to her feet and peered through the doorway into the upper-story hallway; a number of women walking away from her. The same edgy, frightened feeling that waited for her in the hall downstairs began to creep up on her again, but Rue did her best to ignore it, walking quickly towards the group of women. Someone else was here-- maybe they could explain to her just what was going on.
They'd paused, at the sound of her shoes clacking down the hall, she supposed, and Rue cleared her throat. "Excuse me, I--"
Rue paused. None of the women had turned; a few had twitched their heads slightly as if to hear her better, but their faces were still hidden in shadow. Had she disturbed them on a routine of theirs? "Pardon my interruption, but--"
Perhaps she was more on-edge than she thought, or perhaps the woman moved too slowly - but a sharp motion caught Rue's eye, and she instinctively ducked, hearing the hiss of something passing above her head. What--?! The woman who had swiped at her with the object struck again, catching her on the shoulder as she tried to duck away, and she couldn't restrain a cry of pain. Another strike, and Rue was thrown against a door, sinking down against it and holding out a hand as if to ward off another blow. What was this?!
In fright or anger, Rue couldn't tell, a storm of knife-sharp feathers swept from her outstretched hand towards the attacking woman with a metallic hiss; she recoiled, blocking most of the feathers from her face - her face?
There was nothing there, just like the creature downstairs - and it was now that Rue realized that she had been placed somewhere very different from Gold Crown Town.
The faceless women seemed disoriented now that the clatter of feathers had ceased, and Rue held her breath. Of course they couldn't see her, they were sightless, scentless, but how had they known where to attack her in the first place? Sound? Her shoes were noisy, and if these things tracked by ear...
Carefully, trying not to make a sound, Rue reached to slip her shoe off of her foot. The faceless women were still milling about, trying to find her, when she cocked back her arm and flung the shoe as far as possible in the direction of the stairway.
The clattering noise distracted them, it seemed, by the way they darted in that direction, and the dancer clambered to her feet. With a shaking hand she twisted the doorknob behind her and pushed, easing through the crack without taking her eyes off of the creatures. The door closed with an audible click, and Rue once again froze, but the sound of an object battering the door never came.
The feeling of having only one shoe on unbalanced her, and she kicked off the other, looking around the room that would apparently be her shelter until the faceless things were gone. This was... different from the parts of the house she'd seen; all faded, soothing colors and gentle light, with storybook fairies painted on the walls. Juvenile for Rue's taste, but it seemed safe enough.
She stepped further into the room in her stocking feet, not seeming to notice the fairy circle of mushrooms on the walls, or the motion of the painted fae.
[ aaaa why is it so long and meaningless D: ]
