His breath hitched when Machi moved and he pulled deeper into his blankets. Machi was angry, and it was reflecting sharply back on him. He managed to keep his mouth shut, to keep his peace until Machi had finished rummaging and was heading back to bed.

"What are you doing up?" it probably came off more snappish than he meant, but the kid had been screwing his brain sideways for days. When Machi was awake, Ace had no choice but to be awake as well, not unless he wanted his nightmares to randomly mutate into panic attacks. Yukimi was going to lose tolerance with his random flip-outs eventually. He would give ANYTHING to just...dull some of the rough edges and abrasive emotions, they were rubbing him raw. He was tired, damnit. Silence was something he hadn't thought to value, but between Impel Down, Marineford, and now here it was constant peoplepeoplepeople. It was making him long for miles of open water and nothing but his skiff beneath him.

And he couldn't quite be sure if it was his want or Machi's.

For someone who valued freedom as much as Ace, that was the scariest thing of all.
