The attic was a good place for target practice. Sasuke had piled two empty crates on top of each other, carved an X into one side of the top one with a kunai, and proceeded to try to hit it with from a few paces back as accurately as possible.
Itachi had now been missing for two nights and one day, but some of the nights seemed to last longer now that he counted on his fingers. It was somewhere around thirty times that he went to sleep and woke up. It was usually six or seven times a day and double that at night, so six plus twelve plus six was twenty-four, not thirty. Perhaps he was just sleeping less, because after wandering the whole house several times over, he didn't find a hair of Itachi anywhere.
When the water began to go away and the girl with the lantern and the bleeding mouth came back, he remembered what she said the last time. When people disappear, it's because the guys that made the monsters took them. They took Itachi and they brought him here and they hurt and scared everybody and Sasuke knew that most people here didn't really deserve it. Some of them were annoying sometimes, but they were all the good guys and the monster-makers were the bad guys and that meant it had to be up to the good guys to kill them and free everyone!
So that's what Sasuke would do. He wasn't sure how to make them come out yet, but that would come later. Right now he was weak, and still a burden to everyone because he always had to be protected. To fight the monster-makers he needed to take on their minions first, and that meant he would have to get strong, and that meant training!
His blood boiled every time he thought about his brother missing. It wasn't fair, it wasn't fair, it wasn't fair! He threw a shuriken and missed the target completely. They were gonna pay. Sasuke was gonna make them! He would avenge his brother if it was the last thing he did.
