I''ve been studying all this stuff for my new job and I've been downloading PDFs from Cisco's site and printing them so that I can read them and mark them up. Other than the fact that the dialup connection seems to drop out any time we're passing significant amounts of data, this has been okay.
So a few days ago my printer starts making this nasty clacking noise when it's been turned off and turned back on. If you turn it on and off enough, it will finally behave. It's a nice little printer -- prints, scans, and copies and is now available for aabout $150 although I paid a wee bit more for it.
Today, due to all of the printing of product literature that I've been doing, I had to replace the ink cartridge. The printer now wants to align the cartridges. This is fine except that it won't complete the alignment. Every time it goes to scan the printed page, it hangs.
Or it clacks. CLACK. GRIND. CLACK. GRIND.
I discover that HP has 24x7 support and call up and talk with the hapless support guy. I know what's gonna happen before he does, but I go through all of the generic troubleshooting and so on. I know that it doesn't matter what version of OS I'm using, but he doesn't and he has to fill in his little boxes on the support ticket so I oblige him and answer all his questions and even try his nifty neato reset the printer trick. He sounds really happy when I turn on the printer and it doesn't clack. The next time I turn it on, it goes into the death rattle of clacking. He sounded a wee bit less happy then.
25 minutes after placing the call, my suspicion is confirmed. They're sending me a new printer. This is a wonderful thing. What is NOT a wonderful thing is that they're not sending me a new printer until the 19th.
I go scream now.
