In film class I always have the deepest thoughts. Its sad that I have to be watching something where no one is going to talk to me to become distracted enough to get inside my own head, but I think that's what it is sometimes ( Read more... )

Hey Em, I just wanted to share something. I’ve been thinking about all this a lot lately too and today I came to a place other than banging my head against a wall. I don’t think this country's people are as awfully broken as I’ve been fearing. We’re divided, but on a couple of EXTRAORDINARILLY divisive issues that always rile everyone up. They’re boring old issues really, and they aren’t the issues that our president needs to focus on, and more importantly not issues that the president has much authority over. The entire gay marriage debate turned out to be a brilliant political ploy from Bush that forced the country to draw lines and pick sides and forget about the issues that presidents do have control over: The war, health care, foreign policy, social security, etc.

Instead of all the drama, why didn’t we hear debates about whose plan for health care was more plausible, whose plan for winning the war would work? When they talked about these issues, they left out all the details, both of them, partly because Joe American would get confused and complain that the candidates are all the same, and I suspect, neither had workable solutions to present. They didn’t lay out any real plans, they didn’t say look here and here and here, this is why I'm right. They just fear mongered and bickered about who did what during Vietnam. What I'm saying is, the campaigns divided us on purpose by leading us to believe that there is only one answer, when there were no answers. Kerry tried to argue this, but that made him a flip flopper. There aren’t any clear answers about the real issues. They're complex, they suck, that’s what makes them issues! By making a huge deal out of divisive moral bullcrap, and avoiding the things that could bring the country together and actually solve problems, they forced us to pick sides. (Also, part of this is because Bush is a radical maniac.) So there, my train of though for today.
