http://www.zanesvilletimesrecorder.com/article/20111019/NEWS01/111019006/Zanesville-animals-3-left-captured-Lutz-saysHas anyone heard about this?! It's so . . . the only word I can think of "bizarre", but that doesn't sound quite right. I had no idea anyone had anything like those animals up there, and I say this as someone who has relatives in that region of Ohio and has been to Zanesville. (At first, I actually thought it was the
actual conservation center near there.)
A lot of people are talking about the morality of killing the animals too, and while it was a tragedy that almost all of them were killed, I really don't think the police had much of a choice. Waiting wasn't real an option, since having large exotic predators loose near a town, schools, and farms is a recipe for disaster, especially in a place with as much woods around it for them to hide as Zanesville. And I doubt the the police even had access to the type or quantity of tranquilizer they'd need, or the guns they need to fire it.
But seriously Ohio, get better laws for exotic animals. (How do you even get eighteen Bengal tigers? I mean, they're endangered animals! I don't know anything about how you go about buying exotic animals, especially large ones, for private ownership, but I think there is something wrong if that is legally possible with no questions asked.)
