I’m a day late (too busy editing a podcast) but I finally watched the 200th epsiode of Supernatural. And it did not disappoint.
A quick summary of the episode: A girl’s school is putting on a musical theatre production. Sam and Dean are on the job when their teacher goes missing under supernatural-y circumstances. And of course, hijinx ensue when the boys realize that the production is “Supernatural: The Musical”.
First, being a theatre geek (especially a musical theatre geek) this episode not only played on my Supernatural nerd, but my theatre nerd too. I mean I got giddy about the props table. THE PROPS TABLE. [facepalm] And all of the other nerdy theatre stuff - set design, special effects, lighting, and even the blocking. They even did a really great version of Carry On, My Wayward Son.
It was totally fun and really has me pining away for
Front Row Centre to do our own gender-bending version of Supernatural: the Musial. I WANT TO BUILD AN IMPALA, MAN!
As for the episode itself, it was fun. Very, very meta. Definitely calling back to old episodes of Supernatural - especially the pilot. It had a bunch of pseudo-cameos of Bobby, Azazel, John and Mary Winchester, a nod to Ghost Faces, and even Adam Milligan-Winchester.
And while it wasn’t my favourite meta episode in the 10 seasons the show has been on the air - that will always be Season 4, Epsiodes 18,
The Monsters at the End of the Book or Season6, Episode 15,
The French Mistake - I think it was a fun entry into the Supernatural canon. Though, I would be interested to see what non-theatre folks thought of it.
I’m sure I laughed a lot of things that may have gone over the head of a civilian. And honestly, I’m not sure how much I would have enjoyed it without that musical theatre bent. Even with the sub-text!
Still, for me, the quintessential moment of the episode was Chuck’s cameo at the end. As I mentioned in
my previous post, I miss Chuck. So when he showed up at the end, it was perfect and warmed my teeny-tiny heart. It just tied a bow on the episode.
Congratulations, Supernatural, on 200 Episodes! You still make me laugh and fill my heart with glee every time I tune in on Tuesday nights. Thank you!
