CHARACTER NAME: Amelia
FANDOM: Trigun: Badlands Rumble
CANON: Post-movie, after she's spared her father's life and seen him captured.
WHAT THEY LOST: Amelia is going to lose the memory of her choice to spare her father's life. She'll know that she made a choice, but she won't be able to remember what it was. Additionally, if someone who does somehow know arrives and tries to tell or infer it to her, she will either not be able to figure out what they're trying to say, or she'll immediately forget anything she learns. The choice to either spare or kill her father is ultimately what allows Amelia to move on from the situation, and it holds the potential to define her as a person. If she kills him, then she's a murderer, but she's gotten her revenge. If she spares him, then why has she tried so hard to kill him all this time? Given how much she hates him, what reason could she possibly have not to take his life? Without knowing this, Amelia will be put into a position where she's forced to move on regardless, which could provide interesting growth opportunities for her as a character. It will also force her to question herself, as she can never truly think about the climax of her lifelong objective without doubt or uncertainty.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Amelia is generally a loner by her own choice, fairly quiet, and focused on whatever the task at hand is. This stems from her tragic background as a child of an infamous robber-although her father wasn’t present, just being Gasback’s family was enough to cause Amelia and her mother tremendous suffering, up to and including the mother’s death when Amelia was fairly young. She’s not the type to forgive someone for causing suffering because of this, but at the same time, also not the sort who will stand by and do nothing. Again, this is because of her past, where she saw the people of her town just watch as her family was pillaged and robbed repeatedly. This has given her a very determined personality, and when she sets her mind on something, she won’t back down easily. So, when her mother dies and she's effectively orphaned, Amelia eventually becomes a bounty hunter, and a good one, largely in order to track down Gasback and get her revenge.
Amelia is often brash, particularly in regards to men, and comes across as extremely cold towards them. Even in the case of Vash, who at least helps keep her from being raped and killed on the Sand Steamer on the way to Gasback's next target, she simply walks ahead while trying her best to ignore his presence. In other cases, she’ll blatantly ask if men get so worked up over women because they’re virgins, or (when she’s drunk), call one guy a bag of shit. She isn’t completely steeled, however, as is shown several times; when Vash touches her, makes a comment about how they’re fated to be together, or otherwise flirts, she definitely reacts. In the most minor cases, Amelia will cringe and walk away faster. Anything more will spark a violent reaction, and in the case of skin-to-skin contact, Amelia might also pull out a can of disinfectant and spray herself down. She has an actual allergic reaction to touch, although it’s unlikely this is purely physical in nature. Given her issues in regards to how men treat women (particularly her father), Amelia’s condition is likely psychosomatic in nature. Even if it isn’t, however, it’s very clear that Amelia does not like men, particularly if they flirt with her. Notably, however, all of this is reactionary-as stated before, Amelia tends to be the one approached, and would have significantly less interaction with others by her own choosing.
Despite this, however, Amelia is shown to have a caring personality when it comes to the welfare of others. Gasback attacks the city and tries to kill his old henchman (who ultimately betrayed him), but is stopped by Vash's interference. He still "wins," however, by stealing the Plant which provides power for the town, which Cain fixed in order to gain his position and power as the town's savior and Mayor. Amelia is one of the few bounty hunters able to keep up in a car chase-the others being Vash and Wolfwood. Amelia tries to shoot Gasback despite Vash's warnings not to risk the plant, and almost hits the fragile device in her efforts. When she understands how vital the Plant is to the people of Macca, and how disastrous it would have been if she had destroyed it, she feels an immense amount of guilt, even going so far as to compare herself to Gasback in terms of acting without thinking of the consequences toward other people. She then sets her goal of killing Gasback aside, which has been her primary motivation up to this point, in favor of bringing the Plant back for a bunch of people she doesn’t even know. She has a strong sense of responsibility where others might not, taking into account the "butterfly effect" of her actions (which she accused Vash of not doing when she found out who he was). However, she doesn’t run into the situation half-assed or suicidal either, instead enlisting the aid of someone else so she can accomplish her goal. This also shows as she fights alongside Wolfwood, in that she follows his instructions instead of getting hot-headed and trying to go off on her own. She neither falls victim to despair nor loses her common sense in the face of tragedy, instead gathering her mental strength to move forward.
Amelia isn't shown to be particularly religious or spiritual, which makes sense given the hard life she's lead up to that point. Her attitude is a much more practical one, which makes it difficult for her to understand Vash's way of thinking in particular. He doesn't understand how he can just and not kill and be satisfied with how things turn out, and she definitely doesn't understand how, when "fatally" shot, he can simply smile and give a look that says "Everything is all right." She's angry because it goes against his philosophy, and with Vash's death, his rhetoric also dies. Amelia doesn't tend to read so much into situations, although she can be perceptive when people are lying to her. Instead, she looks at the facts and basic motivations, and responds to those.
Given how desperately Amelia wants to kill Gasback, and also how angry she is at Vash for letting him go it might be interpreted as an expression of self-hatred. If Vash hadn’t saved Gasback 20 years ago, after all, the 19-year-old Amelia would never have been born. However, there is no sign of self-hatred in the movie at all. What is revealed isn’t someone that wishes she’d never existed, but more like someone who would have been okay with it if it meant that those other people, especially her mom, might have lived happy lives free from suffering. It’s a fine line, but at the same time, an important distinction to make. Amelia doesn’t hate herself or the fact that she’s alive; she just loves her mother that much. This gets reinforced in her choice not to kill Gasback in the end, because that’s not the message her mother would have wanted to convey. As much as Amelia hates Gasback and wants him dead, she knows her mother loved him. So she sets aside her own hatred for her mother's wish, knowing that doing otherwise would be meaningless.
On the lighter side of things, Amelia does know how to have fun sometimes. She’ll laugh if she thinks something is funny, and she will get absolutely wasted if she goes out drinking. Of course, this might lead to a barroom brawl, but hey, fist fights are fun too, right? The point is, she’s not doomed to only frown at everyone, or perpetually wear a grumpy face. She can even be friendly with a guy if he somehow turns out to not be a completely unforgivable lecher. And ultimately, when she fires into the sky instead of into her father's body, Amelia turns to Vash with a smile saying that now she's cast the dice, and can't laugh at Vash for doing so anymore.
ABILITIES: Amelia isn't a supernaturally-powered character, but she can hold her own in most fights. She's a pretty good shot, which is emphasized when one considers she can use a shotgun one handed despite the kickback, while driving a car in a high-speed chase, and literally miss her target by one or two inches. She's also able to hold her own in a fight; the most impressive example of this is probably when she's plastered, but still able to jump gracefully around a bar, and beat up two (possibly) sober men with relative ease.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: What had she done?
Amelia stretched out silently in bed, one hand cradling the back of her head on top of the pillow. She stared up at the ceiling as if it might hold the key, hidden away in some pattern of random lines and squiggles she might not have seen so clearly if she'd not still been a bit tipsy from going to the bar earlier. But the answer wasn't there, or in the bottom of a beer glass, or anywhere in the whole damn castle she'd been taken to.
She knew because she'd looked, outside and inside, through alleys and corridors, and the thoughts running through her own head. She'd gone over it a thousand times, maybe more. She remembered the man laying there, the infamous Gasback, beaten and prone on the ground. She walked up to him and pointed her gun right there at his chest, so close she couldn't miss this time. The trigger had been hot in the desert sun, hot enough to feel through the glove on her hand.
She'd done something. Amelia knew it, as readily as she knew her name. She knew herself, and she wouldn't have walked away without putting an end to it. But that end was what she couldn't remember, like someone opened a book and just ripped out the last few pages. Easy and clean, and she felt all the more frustrated for the apparent simplicity of it all.
Did buildings feel pain? Amelia was tempted to shoot a hole into that ceiling just to find out, but it'd be pointless. It wouldn't get her that answer any better than staring or drinking, or wandering for hours on end. Instead she rolled over onto her side, and tried to will away the uncertainty long enough to go to sleep.
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: This is ridiculous.
[There's a pause, then a slow sigh-however that would appear.] So everything I say is going to show up? Fine.
My name is Amelia. I have no idea where I am or how I got here, but from the looks of this book, I'm not alone. I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me what's going on.
[Another pause.]
In person. I don't trust this weird thing.
INTENT: I really enjoy Amelia's character, particularly how she doesn't just pathetically mope or go all stupid suicidal hero when she's feeling guilty about something. It's not a common trait in anime characters, especially females, and that really impressed me. She's a fun character to play, and just social enough to get along with people, while being humorously awkward in other situations. As far as Paradisa specifically, I'm not sure what's going to happen yet! But I'd like to explore her character further in the setting, particularly with the chosen loss. Plus, a couple of people I play with in another game really recommended it, so I thought I'd give it a try.
