History: History on another site? When does that ever happen?
Twenty years prior to the main events of the movie, the infamous robber Gasback is stealing from a bank when his gang betrays him. The mutiny is led by Cain, who intends to kill Gasback, but is stopped by the intervention of Vash the Stampede, who lives by a philosophy of not allowing anyone to die. So instead of being killed, Gasback escapes both his betrayers and the authorities, and goes home to his wife, at least for a little while. However, he is fully committed to being a robber, and can’t settle down. His wife, however, knows that tagging along with Gasback just isn’t possible. Instead, she keeps the present Gasback made her as an eternal tie between them, and smiles as her husband goes.
And around nine months later, Amelia is born. Not much of his childhood is revealed, but what is seen is grim. Bandits frequently break into the house, knowing that this is Gasback’s family, looking for whatever gain they can find. The situation is made worse because the townspeople refuse to help the family of the world’s most infamous robber. Yet despite this, Amelia’s mother does whatever she can to ensure Amelia’s happiness, even going so far as to comfort her daughter by smiling just after their home is invaded. Then, one day, Amelia sees her mother putting up a peculiar looking box. When she asks, Amelia’s mother tells her it’s a precious secret, and promises to reveal more when Amelia is older. That doesn’t happen, however, as Amelia’s mother becomes fatally ill-something that might have been prevented if the doctors would have treated her, but again, they refused because she was Gasback’s wife. At a young age, Amelia stands by her mother’s bed and watches her die, as the woman desperately tries, but fails to reveal that precious secret.
Twenty years later, Amelia is a bounty hunter chasing after Gasback, who is rumored to be making an appearance in Macca city, where Mayor Kepler is currently a hero for restoring the Plant that provides electricity for the residents. While on a Sand Steamer headed for the city, Amelia’s gender is discovered by a pair of male bounty hunters who want to have some fun. Greatly against this idea, Amelia proceeds to kick them around a bit, until one manages to pull her leg out from under her. Amelia would have kept fighting, but then some idiot wandered over asking to borrow a knife so he could eat a snack-then hands the knife back over when the guy, who has been screaming threats for several minutes now, says no. Despite the sheer foolishness, the idiot manages to literally wrap the two bounty hunters up in a tarp and stop the chaos. The bounty hunters then get thrown off for having fired their guns on the Sand Steamer.
The idiot, who turns out to be Vash, then takes it upon himself to follow Amelia around like a love-crazed stalker, claiming it was fate that brought them together. Amelia would prefer to have none of it, especially considering how she breaks out into hives whenever someone touches her (she calls it an allergic reaction that happens whenever she comes into contact with idiots like him). She even refuses to give Vash her name, although he learns it from reading the hotel register-after he somehow worms his way into sharing Amelia’s room. Vash’s persistence pays off to a degree when Amelia goes to a bar to get a meal. The place is packed with other bounty hunters also looking to score big by catching Gasback, and the only two open seats are at a table with two insurance salesgirls who happen to be friends with Vash.
Despite it all, dinner goes reasonably well, and Amelia gets a tiny bit smashed; just enough to sway when she walks, mind. She then tries to go to the restroom when she’s once again accosted by a bounty hunter with too much lust for his own good. After she calls the guy a bag of shit, the entire barroom ends up exploding into a massive brawl. Amelia does well for herself, despite being wasted; it turns out that even drunk she’s a pretty good fighter. But then someone has to go and draw their gun, which prompts everyone else to do the same, and shoot-except no one has any bullets. As it turns out, Vash has been going around taking everyone’s ammunition, which ends up spilled all over the floor. While everyone scrambles to get some bullets, Vash and the insurance girls take the opportunity to flee, with Vash carrying the completely trashed Amelia. She tells Vash about the incident twenty years prior, not knowing that this is the same Vash who saved Gasback then, and says that the man who allowed Gasback to live is partially responsible for all the people who have died because of Gasback since. They make it back to the hotel (in less than ideal condition, since Amelia pukes all over Vash on the way back), and Amelia dreams of her mother’s death while she sleeps.
In the morning, Amelia wakes up to the news that Gasback attacked another city, and heads out to follow the new lead, assuming that Gasback himself spread the rumors about appearing in Macca to throw everyone off the trail. Vash says she’s probably right, which prompts Amelia to turn on her heel and accuse Vash of thinking just the opposite. Before she can find out what he knows, however, a loud explosion is heard: Gasback has indeed come to Macca after all.
Despite massive numbers of bounty hunters trying to capture him, Gasback makes it all the way through the city to the mayor’s mansion, thanks in part to both Vash (who is trying to keep everyone alive), and a man named Wolfwood, who is acting as Gasback’s bodyguard until he makes it to the mansion. Once there, Gasback goes after Mayor Kepler, who as it turns out, is actually Cain, the man who betrayed him 20 years earlier. Right as Gasback is about to kill Cain, both Vash and Amelia show up with guns drawn. Amelia warns Gasback that his weird abilities won’t work on her, but Gasback isn’t impressed. He says the girl should have shot him in the back already if she was serious, and points his gun at her. Amelia is about to fire when Vash walks up and sticks his finger in the barrel of her gun. Amelia struggles to get Vash to let go, not actually wanting to blow his hand off, and in the confusion, Cain gets away. Gasback then asks Vash if he’s trying to save him just like twenty years ago, and Amelia realizes that this Vash truly is the infamous humanoid typhoon, Vash the Stampede. Gasback asks if the die he cast turned out well (by making the choice to save Gasback’s life), and runs after Cain.
Amelia takes the opportunity to go off on Vash, asking why he keeps saving people while beating the snot out of him. She claims that while Vash may be able to satisfy himself with the living he’s saved, people could have lived without suffering if Vash hadn’t acted-including her mother. Swearing to kill Gasback, Amelia leaves the mansion.
As it turns out, Gasback wasn’t just in town to kill Cain, but to steal the Plant that made Cain a hero. In a display of perfect planning and timing, Gasback blows up the rigging holding the massive light bulb-shaped object so it rolls downhill through the city, and into the back of Gasback’s truck. Then, there is a car chase! Amelia proves to be an exception driver, and the only one of the many bounty hunters in the chase that can avoid the dangers and the crashes to keep up. Vash and Wolfwood also manage to do so, catching up to Amelia right as she’s about to fire at Gasback. Vash tries to get Amelia to stop, saying that destroying the plant is something she doesn’t want to do. She ignores his cries, however, and takes a shot only to miss. Determined to stop her, Vash moves onto the hood of his car, physically blocking Amelia from firing again. Unfortunately, he also makes himself a target for one of Gasback’s new gang, who doesn’t miss. Vash falls from the car into a pit of quicksand, and despite Wolfwood’s best efforts, is lost; Wolfwood only manages to grab Vash’s trademark sunglasses.
Amelia and Wolfwood end up standing helplessly by the pit of quicksand, and Amelia wonders about Vash and his ideals. She doesn’t understand why Vash saves people that don’t need to be saved, then goes and dies himself with a look on his face that says "everything’s all right." Wolfwood agrees, and says that there’s really nothing gained by death. They deliver the bad news to the insurance girls when they get back to the city, then head their separate ways. Amelia comes across a crowd of townspeople panicking about what to do now that the Plant is gone. The Plant was vital to keeping the city alive, as it powers everything in an otherwise barren desert. She’s especially struck when a mother breaks into the crowd crying for help, as her son was having surgery when the Plant was stolen. Now he’s on a breathing machine that is literally being powered by hand, but there’s no telling how long he’ll last that way. Seeing how important and vital the Plant is to all the people there, Amelia realizes just why Vash tried to stop her. In horror, she drops to her knees, understanding that her lack of consideration for how people would suffer due to her actions makes her the same as Gasback.
After spending a sleepless night thinking, Amelia goes to Wolfwood’s hotel, confirming he was a bodyguard for Gasback. Since he’s no longer working for anyone, Amelia wants to hire him. Wolfwood demands everything she’s got as advance payment, so Amelia tosses up what looks to be a quarter. Wolfwood adds breakfast to the price, and the pair head out to Gasback’s hideout. They make it through the fire of the minor henchmen by splitting up; Wolfwood acts as a distraction to allow Amelia to advance. She finds Gasback and engages in a brief gunfight, but her goal is no longer to kill him. By appearing to miss when she shoots at him, Amelia is able to distract Gasback long enough to start up the truck and take the Plant back-or so it would have gone, if not for the massive chain connected to the rig. Then another gang member comes up behind Amelia, holding a gun to her head and forcing her to surrender. Wolfwood arrives shortly after, but also can’t act because Amelia is being held hostage. Gasback is about to kill Wolfwood, and Amelia looks away when the shot rings out. When she opens her eyes again, however it's the man holding her captive that's taken the hit to his hand and thus been forced to drop his gun.
Surprise! Vash didn’t actualy die-go figure, given that he’s the main character. The bullet was stopped by a particularly hard snack called a toma, and he managed to climb out of the quicksand by grabbing hold of the tail of one of the insurance girl’s mounts as they passed (and almost fell in themselves.) Amelia takes advantage of the confusion by grabbing her gun and pointing it at Gasback’s back, but Gasback wants to finish things one on one with Vash. Vash accepts, and asks Wolfwood and Amelia to step down. Amelia hesitates, her finger on the trigger, but gives in.
After an amazing display of gunmanship, Vash takes down Gasback by disabling the mechanical arm that serves as his weapon. Amelia realizes that Vash’s reputation as an incredibly dangerous man isn’t one based in mere bad luck, but that it’s deserved. Vash apologizes to Amelia for his actions and how they affected her mother, but Gasback isn’t finished. He activates the final weapon in his arm, which sends out a massive wave of electricity at his target. Amelia steps forward this time, calmly holding out her left hand which absorbs all of the power. The glove and sleeve of her jacket are burned away by the electricity, revealing a mechanical glove underneath. Gasback asks how she could have that glove, as it is something he made for a specific person. Amelia then tells Gasback that it is the secret left to her by her mother, and that she is Gasback’s daughter. She blames him for the suffering her mother endured, and her death, then points her gun at Gasback again. Instead of killing him, however, she fires into the air, knowing that what she’s said and done aren’t the message her mother would have wanted to give Gasback. Now she’s cast her own die, and can no longer laugh at Vash.
After that, all the criminals are gathered up and sent off in a police convoy. The last scene of Amelia is one where she’s smiling, watching the caravan before driving off on her own path.
Personality: Amelia is generally a loner by her own choice, fairly quiet, and focused on whatever the task at hand is. This stems from her tragic background as a child of an infamous robber-although her father wasn’t present, just being Gasback’s family was enough to cause Amelia and her mother tremendous suffering, up to and including the mother’s death when Amelia was fairly young. She’s not the type to forgive someone for causing suffering because of this, but at the same time, also not the sort who will stand by and do nothing. Again, this is because of her past, where she saw the people of her town just watch as her family was pillaged and robbed repeatedly. This has given her a very determined personality, and when she sets her mind on something, she won’t back down easily.
Amelia is often brash, particularly in regards to men, and comes across as extremely cold towards them. Even in the case of Vash, who at least helps keep her from being raped and killed on the Sand Steamer, she simply walks ahead while trying her best to ignore his presence. In other cases, she’ll blatantly ask if men get so worked up over women because they’re virgins, or (when she’s drunk), call one guy a bag of shit. She isn’t completely steeled, however, as is shown several times; when Vash touches her, makes a comment about how they’re fated to be together, or otherwise flirts, she definitely reacts. In the most minor cases, Amelia will cringe and walk away faster. Anything more will spark a violent reaction, and in the case of skin-to-skin contact, Amelia might also pull out a can of disinfectant and spray herself down. She has an actual allergic reaction to touch, although it’s unlikely this is purely physical in nature. Given her issues in regards to how men treat women (particularly her father), Amelia’s condition is likely psychosomatic in nature. Even if it isn’t, however, it’s very clear that Amelia does not like men, particularly if they flirt with her. Notably, however, all of this is reactionary-as stated before, Amelia tends to be the one approached, and would have significantly less interaction with others by her own choosing.
Despite this, however, Amelia is shown to have a caring personality when it comes to the welfare of others. When she understands how vital the Plant is to the people of Macca, and how disastrous it would have been if she had destroyed it, she feels an immense amount of guilt, even going so far as to compare herself to Gasback in terms of acting without thinking of the consequences toward other people. She then sets her goal of killing Gasback aside, which has been her primary motivation up to this point, in favor of bringing the Plant back for a bunch of people she doesn’t even know. She has a strong sense of responsibility where others might not, taking into account the "butterfly effect" of her actions (which she accused Vash of not doing when she found out who he was).
With this in mind, however, it might be interpreted that the whole "blaming Vash for letting Gasback go" thing could be an expression of self-hatred. If Vash hadn’t saved Gasback 20 years ago, after all, the 19-year-old Amelia would never have been born. However, there is no sign of self-hatred in the movie at all. What is revealed isn’t someone that wishes she’d never existed, but more like someone who would have been okay with it if it meant that those other people, especially her mom, might have lived happy lives free from suffering. It’s a fine line, but at the same time, an important distinction to make. Amelia doesn’t hate herself or the fact that she’s alive; she just loves her mother that much. This gets reinforced in her choice not to kill Gasback in the end, because that’s not the message her mother would have wanted to convey.
On the lighter side of things, Amelia does know how to have fun sometimes. She’ll laugh if she thinks something is funny, and she will get absolutely wasted if she goes out drinking. Of course, this might lead to a barroom brawl, but hey, fist fights are fun too, right? The point is, she’s not doomed to only frown at everyone, or perpetually wear a grumpy face. She can even be friendly with a guy if he somehow turns out to not be a completely unforgivable lecher.
Strengths: On the physical front, Amelia is actually a pretty good fighter with decent speed and reflexes. She’s able to hold her own against multiple guys when fighting hand-to-hand, proficiently enough that it’s possible she didn’t need to be rescued by Vash at all on the Sand Steamer. Even in the bar, where Amelia’s so drunk that she’s swaying and later sick, Amelia physically fights and wins against two men who not only have a size advantage on her, but who are also stone cold sober. Despite being completely intoxicated, Amelia moves easily and with exceptional balance. On top of that, Amelia’s also a pretty good shot. She doesn’t miss often, and when she does, there are explosions going on, or she’s firing while driving a vehicle going at high speeds, at a guy standing on another vehicle going just as fast. Even then, she doesn’t miss by much: during that car chase, she grazes Gasback’s hat with her bullet.
Mentally and emotionally, Amelia tends to be fairly collected and unafraid. When it counts, she doesn’t get riled, nor does she go screaming and hiding under a table; in one situation, when told to kneel while being held at gun point, she simply stands there with an unchanging expression. Even when faced with a personal crisis, realizing that her actions have made her like a man she despises, Amelia gathers her thoughts, then goes to fix the situation herself, without anyone giving her a pep talk or encouragement. However, she doesn’t run into the situation half-assed or suicidal either, instead enlisting the aid of someone else so she can accomplish her goal. This also shows as she fights alongside Wolfwood, in that she follows his instructions instead of getting hot-headed and trying to go off on her own. She neither falls victim to despair nor loses her common sense in the face of tragedy, instead gathering her mental strength to move forward. She also shows a bit of intelligence and perception, recognizing that Vash is trying to fool her when he says that she’s probably right about Gasback not coming to Macca at all. And despite the stubbornness in her character, she's not so inflexible that she doesn't respect the wishes of others, ultimately backing down at Vash's request so he can face Gasback in a final confrontation.
Weaknesses: Amelia’s biggest physical weakness is her "allergy" to touch, which causes her to break out into hives and itch until she can spray herself down with disinfectant. This is most likely psychosomatic in nature (and thus something that can be overcome through character development), but it has given her a definite aversion to physical contact. She will freak out and react violently to anyone attempting, much less succeeding in touching her. Notably, every instance we see of this is when a man tries to flirt with her, so it’s unknown whether this only applies to them (as Amelia says to Vash, "when an idiot like you touches me"), or whether it applies to everyone regardless of gender. Given Amelia’s history and particular dislike of men, I’d probably play it as the former.
On the mental and emotional front, Amelia can be obsessive, as is made clear by her pursuit of Gasback. She becomes so focused on trying to kill him that she loses sight of the other consequences, such as what will happen to the people of Macca City should she destroy the Plant. She also tends to become violent rather easily when people anger or annoy her, most likely because violence is the only language people tend to listen to on Gunsmoke. She can be especially brash with little prompting, especially when she’s drunk, and is the sort who seems to know just how to piss people off. Notably, this tends to be reactive, as Amelia doesn't go looking for trouble. It just tends to surround her in the form of ugly, horny male bounty hunters with guns.
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person: 1. What is your greatest ambition?
[There's a pause, followed by a quiet laugh.] If you had asked me that a few days ago, I would've been able to tell you. Now I really don't know.
2. If you had to choose between saving someone else's life and saving yours, which would you pick? Why?
I think I must have spent too much time around a certain idiot, because I want to cheat and say that there has to be a way to save everyone. But if I really had to choose, I'd risk myself first. Innocent people shouldn't have to suffer.
3. For whom to you feel the most strongly, and why do you feel that way?
My mom. She went through so much, but she could still smile even when she was sad or afraid.
4. What's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I already told you, in the last question.
5. Do you value yourself? Do you think others around you value you? What would you say is your personal worth?
Of course I value myself. As for others--[She speaks very flatly]--they usually value the fact that I have breasts over anything else.
But personal worth isn't something I think about so often. At least not enough to put into words.
Third Person: It had been a good night: Amelia had made it to town just before dusk, checked in to a hotel, and then managed to find a bar mostly free of sketchy men all too eager to get into her pants. Not that there hadn't been one; there always was one, at least, but that hadn't erupted into a barroom brawl this time. No fleeing from bounty hunters scrambling for bullets either. Just peaceful drinking, and peaceful stumbling all the way back to her bed.
Then for the first night in ages, she slept without any bad dreams. That had been the best part.
She was thinking about all that with her eyes still closed, trying to ignore the sun shining down. Even if it was morning, her head hurt, her muscles hurt, her back really hurt, and she wanted to sleep in now that everything had been settled. But even worse than the light was how hard her bed had gotten overnight, and a cold feeling on her chest. It almost felt slimy, and it made her itch.
Except when Amelia went to scratch that itch, her hand hit a lump that shouldn't be there. That finally got her to open her eyes, only to find something small and green perched on top of her, staring back. Amelia stared at the thing for a moment, half-asleep and fully-hungover brain questioning exactly what kind of animal that was, and how in the world she'd managed to get outside, before an important thought forced its way to the forefront of her mind:
It's touching me.
Letting out a yelp, Amelia forcefully batted the animal away, sitting up in the same motion to put some distance between herself and whatever it was. Doing so sent a sharp spike of pain through her back, however, something too strong to be put away as passing out wasted on a cheap hotel bed. She reached back to check, and for the second time that morning felt something distinctly odd and disturbing. Right next to her spine, where there should be skin-or rather, shirt safely protecting her skin from unwanted contact-there were feathers. Worse yet, if she stretched, she could feel the ridge of a wing connected to her. Then, when she turned to look, Amelia realized what she was wearing, or rather, not wearing. She had not gone to sleep in this get up, and she'd never had wings.
Just what on Gunsmoke was going on?! Amelia fought back the rising sense of panic, trying desperately to ignore what had to be her worst nightmare (and probably the favorite fantasy of that pervert in the bar the night before.) It was her dream, so she could control it, right? She could make the wings go away, and her disinfectant disappear, and then she'd wake up safe and sound and fully clothed--
"WHY ISN'T THIS WORKING?!" Amelia cried out in frustration as she strained to scratch her back, her words fading into a whine.
"So itchy…"
