Zig-Zag Street

I noticed my sister had started reading Nick Earl’s "Zigzag Street", a book I had long been intending to read, but never really had the time. Having not a huge amount of things to do on Sunday evening, apart from dodging the large amount of work I have to do, I took to the novel with an axe. And by axe, I mean, mine eyes. As it turned out, I was so enthralled by the novel that I sat down and read it in one sitting.

It concerns the trauma endured by a 20-something Brisbane male during the early 1990s after the break down of a long term relationship, and his seemingly hopeless quest to find meaning again. Plenty has (probably) been said about this book - it’s been around for a while - and I pretty much agree with most people’s sentiments (or at least the sentiments expressed in the blurb). It a pretty funny book, which is easy to relate to, particularly for a 20 something male like myself. Furthermore, Zigzag street is set in Zigzag street in Red Hill - approximately a one minute walk away from my old share house. The characters in the book frequently talk about local establishments, such as the Lebanese place on Waterworks Road, and other such Red Hill institutions, places I often visited. It just makes it all the more real, I guess. Also, the writing style makes it seriously easy to read - a real plus in my view.I wish I could write like that.

I liked Purvis the Sock Friend and the scene featuring the attempted cat flea bath, and the consequent events that follow on from this. I also liek milk. Not that that has anything to do with the Zigzag street - it is just a fact I wanted you to know.
